I hope you don't mind but a little off topic. From what I can tell this car has a D engine that seems much like the ZC. Issue is that intermittantly it does not start but cranks. I could not hear the fuel pump so I thought it was the main relay. What is weird when it does not start the light for 3rd gear appears on, like you left it in gear. Then when it can start it shows park position as you would expect. Does the ecu in this car regulate the Auto tranny? Any thoughts why this is happening? It's my friends car. Should I just change the master relay for him?

Yes, the ECU does prevent it from starting if it's not in park or neutral. Obviously it's not a very good idea to start the car in a driving gear. I believe on the auto versions of those there is a sensor thing on the shifter handle area. It's connected to the main harness between the driver's seat and the door, running under the carpet under the driver's seat.

If it's the same as the '88-91 CRX setup, it's a slide switch attached to the side of the shift lever. In an auto CRX, the only thing preventing you from starting the engine in gear is the starter safety switch component of that slide switch. It performs the exact same function as the clutch safety switch/relay in M/T cars (which interrupts the starter solenoid signal), but you have to be in park or neutral instead of pressing the clutch.
