I'm looking at upgrading my front speakers to a component set, and fishing for suggestions. I don't consider myself an audiophile but I like to have car audio that sounds better than decent.

I guess I'm looking for help on the following subjects:

1. Best place to mount tweeters on the door panels, that sounds good and won't interfere with any inner door components. I'm trying to go as far forward on the door as possible.

2. Best way to make the hole in the door panel.

3. Best way to route new wires into the door.

If it matters, I'm specifically looking at JL Audio's ZR650-CSi set.

I've seen quite a few people mount them in front of the lock handle. It would seem like a relatively good spot because it's high up and towards the front.

As for cutting out the holes, maybe a fine-toothed hole saw? I'd still be worried about tearing the vinyl on the front...so maybe trace out the circle first and cut it out by hand and then use the hole saw to cut through the rest.

As for the wires, either follow the door harness wires, or splice off of the speaker wires already in the doors. Again, it depends on your setup

I don't know about mounting them in the doors, since I was kinda wary of cutting up my skins, soI kinda ghettoed mine on the dash right above and offset from the vents on both ends. Tuck the wires in the vents, one small screw in the edging of the vent for the little mount the speakers came with, double-sided tape to hold in place a little better.

They'll come off easy (in case I wanna replace 'em or get rid of 'em) and leave no traces behind.

Sounds great to me.

Of course...this is just temporary until I get my power windows installed, then they'll be permanently going into the holes left over from the missing window cranks.

I actually installed some Q-forms kickpanels for my speakers. Yeah, they're down low, but they are aimed better than if they are in the doors. Plus, you don't have to cut anything. You can see them in these pics:

I've liked the Q-forms but I can't see not having my dead pedal, especially on long hauls or races with loads of very sharp turns.

I've seen the tweeters mounted at the door handle, looks good... also seen them in front of the side view mirrors on the A-Pillar, also good. I prefer the more tucked in the corner look of the A-Pillar/Dash corner.

I had a friend with an RX7 convertible who put the tweeters in the vents. I helped him do it. I thought it was a horrible idea because the sound would be somewhat deflected by the vents. But it sounded surprisingly good. And nobody would ever think to look in there to steal your tweeters. They were perfectly hidden. But it was a pain in the butt to do, and I wouldn't want to do it again.

You're limited to where you can put them (at least in my 88 DX you are) because of the vent that runs the air to the window (for defrosting and what not). My install guy installed them directly below that, basically right above the speaker. Sounds good, but I have no basis for comparison.

i have them mounted right infront of hte door handle. But its not flush, just sitting in its little swivel thing with only a small screw hole holding it to the door and the wire running through the hole with the screw.
