I just got a JDM PlayStation 2 for helping a friend move. I'm not sure if I want to keep it or sell it. It came with a few Japanese games, and I've been told it won't play US games unless it's modded, but if I mod it I can also play pirated games. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it, I'll probably sell it or something since we already have a PS2 at my apartment. Anyway, can someone give me details about modding the console?

well.. you get a mod chip, usually you have to solder the chip to different points on the motherboard of the system to make it work.. although i remember seeing mod chips that connected onto one of the inner controller cables and then you use a boot disk

My brother adds harddrives to his, rips the games straight to it from a computer. Do a google search for "ps2 hard drive" and look at some of the links for different software and forums. IIRC a game is about 5gigs on average, and you can add a lot to a 120gig harddrive. All you need is a harddrive and the network adapter, you can pick that up for the cost of the modchip, and no more scratched discs or load times:wink:

Do you need a chip for that? If not I'll just sell this one and do that with the one we have.

i also put a few blue LEDs in the ps2 to make it glow

but as far as modding it its as easy as buying one of the many mod chips out there and soldering it in

PS2 rice!!! Mine is a real type-JDM... it came with a Japanese copy of Ridge Racer, for some reason you have to sit on the right side of the couch when you play it...

LOL, that is hilarious!
It has a 110-120V ps? That is cool, my brothers didnt work, it blew or something. From what I remember he just bought the network adapter, installed the hardrive, and ran the software on the computer to rip the game to the harddrive

Is this a slim pstwo or one of those big ones?

You can't put in a hdd in one of those pstwo's without soldering another pcb to the board. The usb hdd isn't really an option since the compatibility isn't that high but it will work well for some games.

If you don't have a steady hand then soldering a modchip to the ps2 will take you some time. 1mm wide connections and those small rings are a little annoying even after modding a couple of pstwos.

You can get one of those swap magic thingies and avoid the hazards of soldering mistakes.

on my old ps2 i ran some hdadvance software....they sold a disc but mine was already modded so i just downloaded it. I had like a 250GB hard drive in there chock full of game 'backups'

I copied them over via the network to the internal hard drive.
