We run 4 cyl FWD class at the local speedway and I am building a CRx this year. . . to replace the pothetic 90 Sunbird I had last year... anyway... .Its an 88 auto that had the 1.5 dpfi engine... .I swapped a z6 head and MPFI onto it and a pr4 ecu that was socketed and a decent chip... the cage is 1/2 way in and the roof is off..... the body is rough but we are working on that.. . .

My question is>>???
has anyone ever raced a crx or civic on the dirt that may be able to give me some pointers on setting up the chassis or the suspension..... keeping in mind that eveything needs to appear " STOCK " I raced rear wheel drive cars with v8's in them for a few years and we always had a top 3 car at the garage that I worked at... . . but that is totally different from the FWD class.. . . .thanks

It looks like you just might be taking your rex into uncharted territories.

I know almost nothing about what makes a good dirt oval racer, so feel free to yell at me for posting my ignorant advice. All I can think of, and this has nothing to do with suspension, is that an upgrade to a limited slip differential would be vital to keeping all that power to the pavement....er, dirt. A solid fully adjustable coilover system would really help you dial in the right settings, but as you can probably tell, I have no idea what those settings might be.

I'm very interested to see how the rex does, though. Try to get pics, or even video clips of some of your races.

Good luck.

Ill keep everyone updated when racing starts... we plan to video it and take some pics... plus I can post results from the track website
The car has to remain stock so theres really not alot you can do to it..
its an auto dx ( std ) model i did a mpfi conversion on it and a mini me and have a chipped pr4 in it.... other than that its all stock... . should run alot better than last years car though. .

Iran at a track near KC. 2nd the first time, First the 2nd. All we did was stiffen the left front and right rear. If you don't have enough pull of the corner then stiffen the left front more. Now I run the 28 degree .543 half mile oval at I-70 Speedway.

I don't know about a rex but I race a 90 integra on a 1/2 mile dirt track my car is bent as fawk and will still beat on most all american crap that runs my class, even the cheater grand am guys with 2,000+ just in the top end and the only mods I have are a K&N drop in with ram air, and some 1 1/2 drop springs, and a 50 pound chunk of iron on the right front (handled better after that, my track has since got rid of the 50 pound rule for dohc's)

so you should have a fast car olny thing i see holding you back is the slush box on the starts

good luck

This is interesting thank you. Can you please explain why stiffening the left front will help on a dirt oval? I thought that stiffening the right front would be better to counteract the load on that side of the suspension. Yes, I'm new to oval racing.

Weight transfer. Stiffening the right front will make a FWD car want to plow.

hey, I don't really have any dirt racing experience at all but I drive on gravel roads maybe almost every day. This is probably a good place to ask this.. on dirt,,, you turn way early don't you and wait for the traction to catch up? or what? I need advice on handling my crx on slick uncertain surfaces

Yeah the CRX likes to hang the tail out on gravel. Once you're into the turn reducing throttle will increase the oversteer, then you end up spinning it. So you have to keep enough power on to keep it fairly neutral. It's not the normal reaction you are taught ("steer into the skid") but I've found it is an important part of handling a fwd vehicle in uncertain conditions (snow or gravel). Note however that this also applies if you do something like enter an onramp too fast on dry pavement ... I've come close to spinning on dry pavement doing this, and have recovered by getting back on the gas.

If you just take your foot off the gas and try to steer out of it on snow/gravel, you'll be very busy staying out of the ditch. But if you stay on the gas moderately instead, it'll be much more stable and will quit trying to swap ends.

Of course if you're really a maniac you can apply a little bit of handbrake to get it to rotate even faster for a tight low-speed turn on gravel. This is best used for doing u-turns in a gravel parking lot.

I want to do this since I saw the dirt track races after I moved here...I thought it'd be so easy to whoop up on all the other cars...only rules I know of is u can't have engines with over 140hp or torque but they dont have a dyno or anything to check, and I dont think u can have aftermarket stuff. Depending on if u have fuel regulations, I'd build the "Super D" (D16A6 with D17 internals) that was in Honda Tuning, because I think u'd need race gas as it's 13.2-1 compression. 163hp and 135tq I think it had and looked like a stock A6...all parts were oem honda too...

I heard our local dirt oval actually outlawed all hondas from competition due to them taking the win over and over again. Personally I think if the rex was in any kind of good condition it shouldnt be ovaled. But thats just me I kinda have a weird love for the rexes. I feel genuinley bad for old beat up unloved rexes.
