i have been reading lately about a program called [email protected] for those of you who dont know what it is its a program you run in the background of your computer or can run on your ps3 and it uses your spare processes to help aid in research being done to find cures for different diseases. So here is my idea if we can get everyone in the community to run this program and get everyone they know to run the program maybe together we can help find a cure for cancer or something :)

Um, what the crap?

How is having something running in the background of my computer going to find anything but viruses? (yes, pun intended) Sounds almost like a forwarded email that states "Send this to ten people and see a neat secret message".

Sorry if I'm being cynical here, but I don't get it? More info dude...

okay, i guess i was a bit vauge. The program is put out by researchers at stanford university. What it does is use your background low level processes and links your computer up to a network of all the other computers running the program to create a sort of super computer. all of the processes together run data models on how different proteins fold and how they are made up. it is really heavy data so the more machines working together the easier it is to process the workload. also i should have given the following link with my first post it has much more information and probably explains it better than i do.

Look up SETI (no, not Bas... lol!) for links and info on a similar thing for finding life 'out there'...

But no, i won't run anything in the background of my computer.... its slow enough as it is... but good luck with finding stuff! 8)

Yeah I ran the SETI program for a long long time.
No, I didn't steal my name from there.
I too ran SETI for a while. If nothing else it was a pretty cool screen saver. I never did get to claim any "Beings that time forgot" (cool MST3K episode) for my very own. I would have called them BP's.

BP.

I remember my most nerdy friend talking about the background programs in middle school.

I of course objected, they'd take up valuable resources for running my computer games! :p

Naw, most of them yield quite nicely. Early seti didn't on unixy oses, but it niced nicely.
