hey i got this wierd problem with my 88 crxc HF. when i'm in 1st gear at low speeds it starts to jerk :shock: does anyone have any idea what it may be?

Jerking like it's about to stall? I know when I was driving stef's HF it seemed to suck at low RPM, I think because the motor makes such little power/torque it's struggling to move the car at low RPM.

jeez so thats how they are? i thougt there was something wrong with it. its worse when i'm in bumper to bumper traffic people look at me like i'm an idot thinking "dude, this guy sucks at driving"

The car could just need a tune up. Have you looked at the plugs, rotor, cap and wires lately? Misfiring can do what you described.

How bout the air filter and fuel filter?

My 88 Si does a similar thing, however it is only at start-up when the engine is in "its cold" mode. I don't have that problem once the engine warms up.

It's not just because of a lack of torque or power.
My B18C does it too.

Wheels want to spin at X speed. Engine runs at X Rpm. Makes it buck.
feather the clutch is one thing that works. I sometimes pull on the E-brake a little too.

That's what is happening, but the HF motor doesn't have a choice about where to spin because it doesn't have enough torque to overcome the weight of the car, so it shakes as the motor is tossed around the bay.

HF's make more torque than dx motors do, but any small engine is subject to low speed bucking.

And I know we CRX guys see it as a big upgrade, but a 1.8 is still a small engine in the scheme of things.

Well it's really a ratio of torque to weight, as downest was saying. Even semis will buck because of the massive inertia they have to overcome. Something like a V8 in a mid-sized car (like a Mustang for instance) generally won't have that problem, and you don't see it much with diesels either.

My B18C does it too.

I think it would be less pronounced. How long have you had the car? Experience is probably the best solution. I've driven a lot of cars, every clutch is unique, and you just adapt to it.

Screw feathering the clutch, just smoke the tires (tire) until you gain momentum! Plus tires are easier to change than cluthes!!!

i have only had the car for a month or so. the problem is not when i get going its when i creep to a crawl when the problem starts. for example on my way home when traffic is bumper to bumper i'll be on first gear and be going about 5-15 mph the will start jerking for no aperent reason.

Could worn/torn motor torque mounts be making it worse? Perhaps the motor is hitting a resonance at slow rotational speed and causing the bucking to be so bad.
