I bought this car used and it only came with one key. The key fits into the ignition fine, but only halfway into the lock of this mystery compartment located directly behind my seats. The key isn't the original that came with the car, which makes me think that maybe the original key was broken off in this lock. Can anyone tell me how to get this open? I wouldn't mind breaking the lock if thats what I need to do, but I'd prefer not to if possible.

Excuse the dust:

Heh, I had the same problem...

The key wont go all the way in it anyway, but keep trying to turn the key counter clockwise while pressing and releaseing the handle and may eventually come loose...

I messed with mine when I first got it, but it wouldnt open till I tried a brand new OEM key from honda...and thats the only key it works with any way. In other words if the is really worn it probably wont work.

Also try squirting some wd-40 down in it.

Is your key possibly a valet key? Will it open the hatch? The valet key is thicker than the reular one, and shouldn't open wither of those.
Just a thought.
You can go to a Honda dealership and get a key made for like $5, they cut it from a code not another key so it's brand new the way it was supposed to come from the factory. Even if it doesn't fit it's worth having a spare.

I believe I will have another key made from honda. The key I am using now opens the hatch fine, but it occasionally won't turn in the front door/ignition unless I wiggle it around a bit. It's not terrible, but I would like to be able to get that compartment open as I am adding a new sound system soon.

I couldn't find any info on this anywhere else, thanks for the advice guys!

i didn't even realize those things were uniquely keyed. i lways thought it was just kind of generic, and any key would work. I mean, if anyone wanted to get into the compartment, the lock would do nothing.

My original key was a tad bent and I was worried that I would break it so I had it cut at Canadian Tire. BIG MISTAKE the first time the guy who cut it used a key that was made for Hyundai cars. So it didn't even work. The one I have not opens the passenger door perfectly and the hatch but it grinds when I use it on the drivers door and sometimes the ignition. I think I will goto Honda and get a proper one.

Those locks arent heaavy duty, I use a knife to open mine.
And x2 to what think it was Downest that said, if you wiggle it, and just turn, it may go, I've done that in the past.

But I wouldnt break it, looks like you have a clean storage box/rear interior, you should keep it that way!
