I've got an '90 CRX Si that I bought new and it is all stock with 100K on the odo. It's been trouble free all these years and the other day, the idle started acting up. The first thing I wanted to try was to see if it was throwing any codes. I've located the ECM window under the passenger side carpeting. When I turn the ignition to on, it flashes once. With the ignition still in the on position, it doesn't flash anymore. When I turn the ignition off, it flashes once. So my question is, is this normal? I'm thinking it flashes once just to let you know that the LED is working and then you should wait a few seconds and it will then flash to show you any real error codes that may be present. Or am I to take the original first flash as meaning it is throwing a Code "1" which is of course for oxygen content (oxygen sensor). Thanks, Charles

i believe it will only throw a code if the check engine light is on, so that one flash may just be an indicator. Tho i may be wrong. if you have a wierd idle, it is probably a faulty idle air control valve(IACV). its on the back of the intake manifold next to the throttle body. Not sure what to do to clean it, and i dont want to ruin it by giving you false info, so if anyone else could help...

Good point about the check engine light, I wasn't aware about that, maybe some one else can confirm. At any rate, my check engine light is not currently lit up which is a good sign I guess. At this point in it's life, the CRX sits around a lot, sometimes for months before I drive it. I save it for long trips mostly and drive an old truck to work. Maybe the gas got a little stale. I will run this tank out and put some fresh in and see what happens. Anyway, anybody else have thoughts about the engine check light being on to throw codes? Thanks, Charles

no check engine lite, no new codes. The ECU may show codes that have been stored however, but the single flash at start up is normal.

the idle could be anything from spark plugs, fuel filter, bad gas, a bad air filter, (simple cheap stuff) to a distributor starting to let go.

stored codes or soft codes
some codes dont show up as a CEL, i think ELD is an example

what kind of idling issues are you having ?

I guess soft codes... never heard them called that before. The CEL will go out if the problem is somehow resolved, but the LED will still flash a code until the ECU is reset. Is that a soft code?

This car has been rock dependable as are most Honda products. I have maintained the car religiously from day one all with OEM parts and you can eat off the engine. So the other day, my boy and I head for Lowes and I grabbed the CRX as it had been sitting for months and I wanted to exercise it. I got in to start it and had to crank for quite some time before it started. I just figured the injectors had bled down and the fuel rail needed to be refilled/pressured back up after sitting for so long. Drove fine to Lowes and after getting out of Lowes, again I had to crank before it would fire and it didn't want to idle. I had to blip the throttle and finally it smoothed out. Seems it also would hic-cup around 2,000 rpm every once in awhile on the way home. So I started thinking about this error code thing and hense my original post. Yesterday, I took it for a 50 mile trip and then took it to work. It fires right up now and appears to be running like it's old former self. Right now, I'm thinking the injectors may have been gummed up from sitting for so long. I'm going to still run this tank thru and refill with fresh and a bottle of Techron injector clearner. I'll post again if she still acts up anymore.

I will try and get over to the Lounge and intro myself. Thanks to all who responded. Great site. Charles
