Recently I won an Ebay auction for a "mint" set of OEM tail lights for $11. My tail lights aren't broken or scratched but have leaked for years and have a layer of dirt behind the red outer lense I can't get out. I won the tail lights from a seller in Canada. He charged $25 for shipping with no options. I got them in the mail today. They were "wrapped" in a single piece of butcher's paper, duct taped together, that's it. As you can imagine I recieved mostly pieces. Amazingly the passenger side light is usable but the others are now garbage. I'm realistic, it was only $11, and I know the shipping cost him $19. So what should I ask for - all my money back, part or what?

BTW I'm going to do an experiment with the busted up driver's side light. Rumor has it if you heat them in the oven you can take the lenses out without breaking them. If it works I'll just clean out my originals........

Hmmm...sounds like a shady seller. You can ask for your money back, but realistically, he's probably gonna laugh at you all the way to the bank. How was his feedback rating? Did you already leave him feedback? Has he already left you feedback? If he has already left you good feedback, and he is unwilling to provide you with at least a partial refund, feel free to blast him with a negative comment. Any sane person would know that you can't send fragile items in the mail without proper packaging.

Stickershop, the weird thing is that the guy has impeccable feedback (100+ positives, 0 negative mostly as a buyer). I agree that any sane person would realize you can't just wrap a single piece of paper around fragile plastic and have it make it safely across not one but two countries. I offered him $20 additional dollars if they made here safe. All he emailed back was "Keep your money" so I think he knew there wasn't a chance in Hell. It's only $36 but it's $36 dollars for one usable light when 3 were promised....

Was the package insured?
If so you should be able to collect from the shipper...

and even though he pays on time for stuff he wants as a buyer does not really make him a good seller... . you can get a sutrdy cardboard box for free and some free newspaper and even bubble wrap for free if you scrounge around he is not going to keep a good feedback if he keeps this up.... were the lights broken in the pic? was there a pic? post the auction number I would like to check them out...

Often a lot of bad sellers maintain a good feedback rating by not giving out feedback until they receive feedback. They use this as a sort of extortion tactic to keep people from posting negative feedback. This is the mentality: "if you leave me bad feedback, i'm going to leave you bad feedback even if you didn't deserve it."

I would try the reasonable approaches first. Be polite and show pics of the broken product if you can. If there was insurance, try to go that route. But they probably won't cover the damage even if it is insured because it was insufficiently packaged.

Stickershop, I think you just explained why he hasn't left me positive feedback yet. I paid through Paypal instantly, replied quickly to his email and he didn't leave me feedback. I did everything perfect on my end. Good sellers usually leave positive feedback as soon as they ship the item and don't wait to see what you leave them. So this guy is going to leave me negative feedback if I leave him some. Makes sense, now i have to decide if $36 is worth ruining my perfect feedback rating.

contact him and let him know who knows maybe he will refund your money and tell you to keep them. some people are pretty cool on ebay you just gotta give em a chance.

I don't leave feedback until I can verify that the buyer has received their product, and is satisfied. But I don't do it to extort my customers into leaving good feedback. I do it to encourage resolution of situations if problems arrive. (ie: product doesn't arrive, or arrives damaged, or maybe I sent the wrong colour, etc). Lots of people are lazy, and they would rather just give you negative feedback than tell you about the problem and ask for a solution. Some people say that the buyers role in a transaction is done as soon as they send payment... I disagree. As far as I'm concerned, the buyer still has a role in the transaction until they have the product in hand and a smile on their face. Sure, I do this for a living, but I'm not just in it for the money!

I got screwed with some negative feedback a couple years ago when i sold a playstaton game on eBay. The idiot that won the auction never paid me, and after about a month of not even getting replies to my emails, I went ahead and left him a negative feedback. Bad move. The jerk myseriously pops back into existance and left me a negative feedback about how he supposedly emailed *me* repeatedly, and that *I* didn't respond to anything! Funny. I have just over 100 feedbacks for items that I sold under the exact same email address over about 4 years, and his was the only negative feedback on the list.

I firmly believe that people should have to undergo a psychological assessment and a practical exam before they are allowed to use the internet.

same thing happened to me. some guy won an auction, then after i repeatedly emailed him, he didnt reply. i didnt leave any feedback. he left me neg feedback saying i didnt respond to him. wtf? good thing you can respond to feedback.

Dont ruin your feedback over a few bucks.... i forgot to ship an imac one time and ended up overnighting it to the guy for 120.00 just to keep my good name and i only have like a 50 feedback rating. . .

Try to contact him and see what happens

Yeah, I think I'm going to let it go. I emailed him a couple of times. He finally got back to me and said "Damaged, what do you mean damaged?" So today I'm going send him some pictures of the pieces but I don't expect anything really. If he gives money back I'll leave positive feedback but if he doesn't I won't leave any feedback at all.

I have the driver's side that's still usable (not the passenger side like i said originally). It's got a scuff mark I should be able to buff it out (I hope) but other than that it's good. Right after I got the broken lights a passenger side light showed up on Ebay with "Buy It Now" for $20 so I bought it (I'm a glutton for punishment).....

I know how it is, someone sold me a CRX part that was NOT a CRX part, it was off of a Civic, however, they had knowingly made the title misleading to sell it. Anyway, after numerous emails the knuckle head wouldn't work with me on it. As soon as I left him negative feedback I received a retalitory one in return. Which sucks and of course you can not get any help at all from eBay for anything, ever.

I see the bonehead that screwed you has received a negative someone else he overcharged for shipping and failing to package an item properly.

The ones that amaze me are like these power sellers who have 2 or 3 hundred negatives in a month, how in the hell does eBay allow them to continue?
