I talked him into one hell of a price, and he's keeping the ZC. ( I didnt want to mess wit ha motor swap anyhow, lol )

How's $400 sound? HA! You couldnt get teh hood + mint Si seats for $400 ... YES!

Even if I end up parting it out, I'm still ahead... Time to save a bit more and get that H-back from ollie, and swap over the dash in the hatch to a CRX interior and have a back seat, wewt!

Sorry, had to share my excitement. After looking at it a few more times, I don't think the rocker rust is as bad as I thought. I'm going to have my dad's friend weld some angle iron to the jack points, just to be safe when I lift it up. I'm not looking to keep this car as a DD anymore, just something to tool around with until I get a flawless hatch. Wewt!

The more I think about it, I almost feel dirty taking it for so cheap... lol But a good dirty. You know, like after an all nighter and you wake up in a stranger's backyard with 20 pairs of women's panties ... and some of them aint yours!

mithuth, well that stinks. But better to pass on a rust bucket nightmare. Fixing rust is such a royal pain in the posterior. I would've passed on it too. Keep looking, somewhere out there is rust free (or at least lightly rusted) shell......

With a ZC swap minus the oil pan and crank pulley, mint Si seats, and a Carbon Fiber ZC style hood, I could easily part out the rest and make more than my money back, but the little bit I would gain would probably be spent messing with packaging and shipping and such to keep the item prices fair for hte buyers.

I remember a few of us telling you the rust was too bad to warrant a purchase...I'm glad to see you have come around and agree.

There is another crx out their for you...if I found one, anyone can!

I went up to the house where he has it stored under the car port (the house is vacant, it's his inlaw's old house) I laid in the snow and took some peeks underneath and saw the rusty looking jack points and that set off a huge red flag.

Once he got there so we could "fire it up" we messed with it for 45 minutes in the 10 degree cold and it never started. The battery was beyond dead and even with the Jeep on the other end of the jumper cables it would barely roll over. I heard lots of clicking form the main relay under the dash that I had never noticed before on either of my other CRXs, and the fuel pump kept making an odd "Whiirrr" sound when I turned the key from off to start. It needed so much stuff, I could almost but a blank shell and rebuild from there and spend the same or less money.

So you don't need the oil pan, crank pullies and plugs I was about to box and ship to you?

Robyn will be happy to see them off the kitchen table either way

I know he bought the ZC for 150, so tomorrow moringin when he calls asking for a final decision, I'll explain it all to him. I'll make an offer for the ZC + ecu + Si seats + carbon fiber hood before the car goes to salvage and see what he says. I can't see investing a lot of time or money into it when it's so worked over.

If he'll sell the ZC seperate, I'll still need the parts.

I would hate to see those parts go to salvage.
They wont be now. *edited original post with more details*

He called me today (my friend who owns the CRX) and needed my credit card t oorder some parts for his newly aquired AK-47 from an online store. I, of course, don't mind helping him out and we got to talking about his CRX, and what he's going to end up doing with it since it's "SOOOOO RUSTY" ... (I think I over dramatized the rust a bit, to help get the price lower, time will tell.) And he said he'd probably toss some parts off it into his shed and let the salvage yard take it.

Anyhow, I offered him 400 for the car, as it sits, minus the ZC, and he wanted the 16" Konigs and CD player from the car. He has some stockie type 13"s in his shed so I didn't care about that.

SO for $400 minus the cost of his AK-14 parts, I'm going to pick up the 90 CRX Dx later today. Wewt!

If that is what you are using the car for, would you be interested in selling the CF Zc hood?
Cash plus and i pitch in a decent OEM hood?
*edited(
Let me make sure the CF hood is in good condition, that may be an option. It would REALLY make the wife happy if I can turn the majority of the cost of this around. She's not too happy about another CRX going in the garage... :rolleyes1:

I'm more interested in a JDM front end conversion on the hatch ... I've got a lot more research on the hatchback JDM conversion. I plan ot have the hatch painted Rio Red, so I may want to trade the Mint 89 Si seats (grey/grey) for the 90-91 Si seats (grey/red) to help blend the interior with the exterior.

Alright.
But I beleive the JDM front end conversion for a hatch is the same as a Crx.
The US hood design will not work with the JDM front end conversion because of the SIR headlights.

I don't know if it's the same, but it's dang close. I know the civics had that panel above the bumper but below the headlights/hood. I didn't know if the JDM civic had that or not.

*he hit enter before I did. lol*
Yeah, that was the little difference I was talking about.

I know the USDM ZC hood wont fit the SiR conversion. I'm jsut trying to weigh my options and not sink money into the CRX before I get a hatch. I'd rather put the money into the "family" oriented EF/CRX platform car.

Update:

I took a 5gal can of gas, a 20oz bottle of isopropyl, and jumper cables. I hooked up the cables while I messed with getting some gas and the isopropyl in it. After letting the battery "charge" for a few minutes, it fired right up.

Unfortunately, the Dx doesn't have enough torque to unfreeze itself from the ground, LOL. I didn't have a proper tow strap to yank it free, but I'm going to grab a D-ring and my nylon strap, and go back tomorrow and get her free.

It blew black smoke for about 3 minutes, but I think that's cuz it's been sitting for a year and a half. The idle was very erratic. It bounced from 1K-2.5K rpm. I checked the ECU, but there were no codes, so I'm thinking possible EGR valve. Also, the motor warmed up pretty fast, so I'm concerned the thermostat is stuck shut. I'm going to AAA to get the title work done, and it's cheaper to sign up for AAA and get the title work done free. So what I'm thinking of doing is waiting a few days and calling them to say I need a tow home.

Oh, and the clutch is smoked now, and gawd, what a smell. I think I burn it up really bad while trying to get the car unstuck.

So the simple list is:

  • clutch, I'll need help putting this in, I have NO idea what I'm doing, but want to learn.
    fix random idle
    thermostat
battery and relocation to the lock box
    possible alternator
    timing belt
    ground wires
I'm sure there's more as time goes on, but that's the quick list. I don't know if I'm going ot bother with body work. I may just drive the hell out of it and let it rot away. The long term plan is to have a Civic Hatch so I cna take the kids with me too.

Civic SiR front end is slightly different from a CRX.

I didn't mean to infer that the Civic and Crx have the same JDM front ends.
What i meant was if you do a JDM front end conversion on either car, the the basic process was the same. You can't mix US parts with the JDM front end ( with the exception of the fenders maybe.) If you go JDM front end, the US hood will not fit.

So if he did end up going JDM front end on a hatch, he would not be able to use the ZC hood.

Update:

Got her started, unburried, and drove it home today. What a horrible pulse it has. lol. The clutch is FUBAR and will need replaced ASAP. Plus it's got an erratic pulse too. It surges power, then dies out, then surges power again. I bought a cap and rotor today, and will pick up NGK plugs and wires for it tomorrow when I go back out. I also think it needs an alternator, but I've heard nightmares about changing them, and dont want to mess with it until I do the timing belt. That way I dont have to take a ton of things off over and over.

Hopefully I can do some write ups with pics on how I change stuff, so I can contribute to the tech portion of the site rather than just babble in the lounge. hehe.
