Although I cant answer your original question.I can tell you that the DX model for 1990 wasn't a 1.6L.
I do believe that all DX models got the D15b.
So we are talking about two 1.5L.
I do know that there is a source page out there that lists the engine types with trans codes..I'm looking...will let know when I find it.

No it wont. You need an L3 tranny from an 88-91 crx/civic/hatch to bolt onto the engine.

There's more - you need to get the right year tranny to match your clutch or the spline counts on the disc and input shaft wont match or mesh.

sort of...the only transmission he needs to worry about is the 88...89-91 transmissions will work with each other since they all have the same spline count...
