I was cleaning out The Raspberry today, and found this under the rear carpet. At first I thought it was some form of bedliner, but it's not very durable. So I'm guessing it's some sort of spray on sound deadener?

You can see in some areas where it's flaking off, and the original paint can be seen underneath.

Anyone know what it is and how to remove it without damaging the paint underneath?

From those pics its kinda hard to tell for me.
How thick is this "paint"?(sorry it almost looks like blue paint to me.)
Any closer up pics would help greatly..

It's textured like bedliner, only thin like paint.

If I recall correctly, Stinger and/or Dynomat used to sell a spray on sound dampener, but I can't recall which one. Also, no one I know used it back when big audio setups were the "in" thing to do.

Here you can see the texture a bit better, and how thin it really is.
I'm almost 100% that it's some form of sound killer.

Nope, that's alien blood. Some one must have hauled a dead or wounded alien in your hatch. That blood comes out of carpet if you put salt on it, but not off metal. Don't ask me how I know.

It's called a "joke". He must be smoking crack to come up with a JOKE!

As far as this hatch stuff goes-- if it's thin like paint it's pretty much useless as a sound deadener. So, if it IS, in fact, a sound deadening product, it's not a very good one (or a very good application of one, anyway). You will most likely have a heck of a time trying to remove it without damaging the paint underneath. Are you stripping the rear interior or putting it back in? Just wondering if you're trying to end up with a presentable finish or if it's going to end up under carpet. Is your goal weight reduction or a nice, quiet cabin and/or a good stereo?

Could it be that the metal underneath is rusty or somehow otherwise messed up so that the blue paint just looks rough like a pseudo bedliner?

The end goal is to have a daily driver I can drive and not mind driving. lol. It will have full interior and be covered with carpet. It isn't THAT big of a deal, I just wondered what it was. I was thinking maybe someone tried to do to this car what I did to my Jeep. Bedliner it and have 1" drain pulgs. So when it's dirty, you jsut pull into the car wash, pop the plugs out, and spray away. lol.

I've been asking around at a few of the local audio shops mentioned an old spray on sound deadener that was put down with air guns. They said it was a short lived product because of the mess it created elsewhere in the car. But so far, no one can tell me what the name brand of that sound liner is. The search continues. It's a thin layer of paint, with bits of sound dampening material mixed in it.

I dont want to put paint thinner on it where I'll end up having to repaint inside the car. I may just leave it. It really don't bother me, I jsut wondered what it is.

It's not rusty at all under it. The unibody is pretty dang solid, a lot better than I had originally thought. The only spots i've found surface rust is the driver's side shock tower under the hood, and that's just a light dusting of surface rust, and the front jack points have light surface rust on them. The rear quarters have a touch of bubbles on them, but they've been rebuild/putty'd already, so it's expected. Maybe one day I'll get the rear quarters fixed, but I doubt it. lol

Sorry mith I've been offline for a few days.

That most definatly looks like that crappy textured paint like what a previous poster said.
Most likely your best bet would be to use thinner and a rag and test a area first.Being that they are both a paint product you will at best only dull the factory paint underneath.
I mean at least this stuff is only in the trunk area right? If it does manage to take the factory red off I'd just rattle can it primer black.
LMK how it goes man.

It's Stinger brand Sound deadener. I've posted it on a few audio sites. it was a big thing back in the mid 90s to coat your trunk and doors with it so they'd cut down the rattles and supposedly helped hold the sound inside.

Im not overly worried about it, I'll just toss the carpet back over it.

I didnt know what the heck it was. I hope it don't stink in the warm sun... lol.
