Ok well today was a pretty boring but good day. I had a lot of tests today at school but my friends and I still had fun so it was all in all a pretty ok day. Then after school I went and put in my 2 weeks notice at work becuase I just got a new job on Tuesday that will pay more(more money means more fun :D ) And then I was on my way home from there, nothing out of the normal. I took the same way I always do and I noticed a state patrolman behind me and thought no big deal. Just drove like normal except a little slower since I usuall go a over the speed limit. Well anyways right after I make a turn the cop hits his lights......

I was pissed at first because I thought that my turn signal wasn't working or something like that and assumed I'd have to pay for a ticket and a light. Not to mention here in Highland county any time a minor gets a moving violation they take away your lisence. So I was hoping the cop would be cool and let me go just telling me to fix it. But anyways to get on with the story I go about 200-300yards down the road and pull in a parking lot so we're not in the way of traffic.

Then he walks up to my car and asks why I didnt stop at my last turn.....I told him that the stop sign we went by says right below it "except when turning right"......he gave me a sort of puzzled look and says "do you actually expect me to belive that?" So from there I went on to tell him that I've lived in this town for about 12 years and that stop sign has always said except when turning right under it. And told him that we could walk back there to look at it if he didn't believe me. From there he went on to say that it would be a waste of time because he knew "for a fact" that I have to stop there. So I had to ask for his badge number his name and all the info I am legally intittled to before he finally admitted that he was new to the area and hadn't noticed the small sign saying "except when turning right"

It just made me mad that A) a cop would make a stop without actually looking at the sign. and B) that he tried telling me "for a fact" that I was supposed to stop. I know that cops make mistakes but this guy just wouldn't stop and was planning on giving me a ticket untill I asked for his supervisors number and where to call to file a complaint. It took at least 15 minutes before he would let me go.

Well thats the end of my little rant but of all the cops I've met this guy was the most ignorant I've talked to.

A stop sign lets you go when turning right? What about oncoming traffic turning left when its their turn do they just stop in the middle?

Im confused. :?:

the road comes to a T and the cars from the left have to yield to you. It's because of the way the roads there meet. Theres three ways you can go but almost no one ever comes from one direction so it's set up so that when you come from that one direction you don't have to stop if your going right. I think thats the only sign I've ever seen it on too but I go by it so often I'm just used to it. yeah it is kind of confusing and weird but if you saw it you'd see why it makes sense the way they have it set up.

nope.....its two roads that come to a T.....and when ur on Road A (running we'll say up and down) you have to turn left or right onto road B running left to right. When road A and B meet there is a stop sign. But because there is almost never traffic coming from the left of road B there is a small white sign under the stop sign that reads "except when turning right" Traffic on road B coming from the left have to yield to Road A but has the right of way over traffic oncoming to them. There is a stop sign at all three directions. I know it's hard to try and get a mental image of but it makes sense when you live here and know where most traficc is heading. I can see how the cop might have missed the sign that says "except when turning right" but what made me mad was that he tryed to say that I was making it up and that he knew "for a fact" that I had to stop.

I've seen the above situation at a few local intersections... The one that comes to mind is like this:
Think of a T (the letter), but as roads. The traffic coming in from the right has a regular Stop (and yield to everyone else) sign... This is a low traffic side-road. The traffic coming in from the left has a Stop (except for right turn) sign. Traffic coming in from the bottom doesn't have a stop sign or anything at all. This setup allows free flow of traffic from the bottom, turning left and from the left, turning right (out the bottom).
I've also seen a few 4-way intersections with a similar setup in PA. The same as above, except there's another road at the top of the T with a normal Stop (and yield to everyone else) sign.
Those turn exception signs aren't uncommon around here... I guess the cop grew up somewhere without that kind of thing.

I've also seen that kind of intersection, although rarely. Funny the officer didn't know about it, and it's too bad he gave you a hard time. I wonder if he would have acted the same with an adult.
