Did you use Penzoil oil or Penzoil syncromesh?

If your tranny is making bad noises and such depending on what you put in it, you have a bigger problem than the wrong fluid. When I do mine, I always put in the same 10W40 I put in the motor, just as the manual calls for, and it's fine. Don't use expensive oil as a band-aid for a larger problem.

no, it wasmt making any noises, i was just going by the fact that it should be replaced every 30,000 miled, and the last time it was changed was 110,000.

I used syncromesh, but i believe its a lot thinner than what it should be. i'll be replacing it today anyway.

The first time i changed the trans oil in my car, i went and got some synthetic motorcycle oil made by valvoline. it was expensive, but i figured if it was made to work in a motorcycle tranny, maybe it would hold up well in the crx.

In opinion the honda mtf only feels marginally better than this motorcycle grade oil. So if the dealership is that far, you might try some of that.

Just throwing ideas out there.

Motorcycle oil is a little different because most bikes have a wet clutch, so the oil is different.
From what I've read, that sounds like the same issue Hondas trannys have with modern motor oil. They've added new friction reducing agents to motor oils since the '80s when our transmissions were engineered. As such, the syncros slip more than they were designed to when you use modern oil. Honda MTF is simply motor oil without those additional agents - similar to what you could buy in the '80s.
A motorcycle has the same issue - excess slippage. Those agents would make the clutch slip more than it was designed to, possibly reducing it's torque-holding ability.
Right? I'm not saying it is or isn't safe to use motorcycle oil in your tranny - I'm just pointing out the parallel.

Right bobski. Rereading what I wrote it doesn't really make sense literally... hehe I'm a little tired. But yes, the friction modifiers and detergents in the oil are the problem with motorcycles/wet clutches. Most non-synthetic oils are fine in bikes, I have always used Castrol GTX in my bikes and my car, for motor and tranny. Funny enough, my old Nighthawk, the 700, took the same oil filters as the CRX!

My grinding is getting worse and in about every gear now. I think I am effed. I am going to swap out the MTF with some Syncromesh and see if I can get a few more miles out of it.
The GM Syncromesh helped my YS1! I dont know if the Penzoil is the same?
Since you dont have to change it often the difference in price is meaningless.

The penz and the GM is sopposed to be the same. I think Im gonna try the GM stuff since a dealership is right in town...

I heard there is also something that the Land Rovers (maybe jeeps) use that is basicly exactly like Honda MTF.....Is this true I know I read it somewhere, I think the thezcr.com.
