They mine under Cayuga?
Yup, salt, 24hrs a day, 6 days a week,24/7 if demand and weather call for it.

As for that story that was posted about the mine collapsing, i'm not real worried about that happening here.
There are no oil rigs drilling on Cayuga Lake, we're almost 2400ft below surface & the lake is 400ft at it deepest point. We mine at what is called 6 level, it is a salt vein, the vein runs from Cleveland/lake michigan area up into Canada. Where we are under the lake, between 6 level and the bottom of the lake, plenty of rock above to support the mine below. The salt at this level and below the lake is the most pure, which is why we mine exclusivly under the lake and no longer under actual land. Mining is done by the room & pillar method, which means when we mine and blast, we leave large square shaped salt pillars, approx. 40-50ft dia. x 12ft high and 30 ft apart from one another to support the roof. Along with those, the 5 foot roof bolts and the mine under the watchful eyes of the engineers, i am pretty confident under there.
Also, from a legal standpoint, it is easier to gain mining rights from NYS to mine under the lake than it is to ask individuals for mining rights for mining under their private property.
