After what happened with the xbox 360, I am definitely getting a ps3 and it's going right to ebay. I couldn't believe how much people were willing to pay for the 360 on ebay - it was ridiculous. I got out of video games a while ago, I haven't had a new system since N64, just don't have the time to play it, though the occasional grand theft auto at friend's places is always entertaining.

When does the ps3 come out? and can you reserve it ahead of time or do you have to camp out? Any advice from someone who has done this before? I've never camped out for anything, but the prospect of making a couple hundred bucks from simply camping out one night are enough to get my interest.

PS3 goes on sale on November 17th. Most retail outlets will not do pre-orders, and the ones that do are already sold out.

I camped out for my Gamecube in 2001, we got to Target at about 1am, and they opened the doors at 8am. They had about 20 I think.

I also waited in line for an Xbox 360 with a friend (he was the buyer, I still don't have one). We got to a 24hr Wal-Mart at about 5pm, and we were next to last to get one. They went on sale at midnight, they had about 12.

Bring someone along or at least something to do. Nintendo DS or PSP or something. Waiting in line for 7 or 8 hours sucks. It may be even longer, I don't know how big the demand for PS3 will be, but I'll be checking stores all day on the 16th.

Sounds to me like Nintendo is aiming to clean up when the PS3 shortages become apparent.

While I would like to stick with the Gran Turismo series, Sony has shown again and again that they will screw over their customers at the faintest glimmer of a profit to be made. As I understand it, Blu-ray makes up a significant portion of the PS3's bloated pricetag. Higher resolution is nice and all, but the DRM that comes attached makes it pointless unless you also want to buy an HDCP enabled TV. They claim they won't use the Image Constraint Token (which forces the video output to a lower resolution unless you're using HDCP), but it's still there. You know as soon as Blu-ray gains a foothold, they'll turn it on. On top of that: "Oh boy, A new format! Time to run out and buy all those movies for the third time!". Bleh... The hell with that.

MS is just evil coagulated into a corporation, so that leaves you with the Wii. Just as well - Nintendo seems to be the only one trying to innovate lately.

Nintendo makes high profits, it is a good business that tries to innovate. Sony became too large and screwed itself when it bought a record company. The PS3 may initially sell well but it will be the final thorn in Sony's side. I don't see HD DVDs or Blu-Ray catching on anytime soon. You won't be able to get any bennefit out of older movies because they were not filmed in HD. The newer movies may look nice but those few. A cheap up convert DVD player will give you a sharp image from your DVD collection.

I went to a 24 hour Walmart around 11 at night and got a Game Cube with ease when it came out. I don't know if I want to wait in line for hours and hours to get a PS3. I live in a small town so maybe I'll be able to do that here.

Well even if you only make $400 profit from it, and wait an exorbitant 12 hours, that's still over $33 per hour. If you make $600 profit from an 8 hour wait, that's $75/hour. Sign me up.

As a "starter" video game system, one that's got plenty of games available right now, is easy enough to use and doesn't cost a fortune, which would you recommend? I know nothing about them, but think I need to get one for the upcoming winter. Something that can have two-player stuff, too. I'm looking for something I can get decent games for at Target or Wal-mart or wherever.
Sony's Playstation 2 easily has the most games available, and it's likely to stay that way for a while. I have the most fun with my Nintendo Gamecube though, so that gets my recommendation.

Yes, it realle depends on what kind of games you play.

On my PS2 I have a couple of fighting games, skate games... but I haven't taken Gran Turismo out of the thing in months.

Nintendo is a bit more "colorful" entertainment. Lots of fun platform games if that's your thing.

However, I still find the PC the best gaming platform. I like my ghost recon, and Rainbow six/SWAT games too much. Games like that just don't work at all on consoles.
For my PC I have a wireless game controller that's an identical clone to the PS2 one. I use it for Need for speed and such games.

PC's are awful to haul around tho. I can just tote my PS2 around anywhere. For my PC I need to set up a network. It's just not the same, and I'm getting a little old for LAN parties.

(For Mark, That's where a bunch of people bring their PC with them in your house, and you fill your house with keyboards, monitors, miles of network cable and beer)
