Performance? 13" wheels and tires?

3369 Views 23 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Angry
I've got some 13s on my CRX and I'm looking to replace the 13" snow tires (no gripping POS tires that they are) with some sort of better performance 13. Wasn't there a link around here that had some info about good performing 13s?

Basically the way it is now, when I apply the brakes hard, the wheels lock up but the tires don't grip the road to slow the car. I just sort of go into a skid until I let off the brakes.

I did a search, but didn't find anything. I know it's been mentioned, but I can't find it.

Sumi HTR200s are a popular, almost sporty 13" tire. Alot of the MG and Triumph folks seem to love them.

I'll look into em.

I was looking at Yoko AVID T4 or something like that, on tirerack.com and for $36 each, I can afford a few experimental tires. LOL. I think Tom had them in 14s on his CRX. Maybe he'll chime in with his experience with them.

For me, I'd like a good grip (as good as a 13 can get anyhow. lol), long life, and a fairly quiet ride. After all, it's a DD. I'll get some nice 15s with high performance tires for the meets and track days, once hte car's worthy of such things.

*edit to add*
On a side note, I can't seem to find any 13" wheels I like. lol. I miss the 80s. lol
Here are some panasport-like 13x6s for sale, and some old VWs too:

I can't see pics. I'm not a member.

Too bad they don't make Rota Slipstreams in 13. lol

I like those. Infact, I was jsut talking to Matt Miner about the Panasports and Rota's knock off.

I may have to pop over and see what's happening on red pepper to see what they got in thier sale section.

i had the 13" yokohama avid T4's. they were OK, but definately not a "performance" tire. i mean i could go out and have fun with them, but realistically theyre just all season tires. thats why i got them, they were cheap tires that i could switch back and forth to between my azenis. i considered them my "cailifornia winter" tires... basically enough tread to handle rain.

as someone mentioned, the cheapest and grippiest 13" is the sumitomo. at least its a summer tire.

otherwise, you might as well shell out big bucks for yokohama A032's in 13". $136 per tire!
The Sumitomo HTR200s are probably the best 13" tires you can buy for performance.
The only thing I don't like about sumi's are that the sidewalls are super soft, and make hard cornering a little weird. and due to that, they also go out of round if you park the car for more than a day or 2.

The Sumi's are rated with a higher PSI than other tires of the same size. Add a few PSI more air pressure and the soft sidewalls are gone.

I daily drive on some 14" Sumis, with about 38psi, they are rated up to 51.

Never autocrossed them, they are not sports tires like Azenis, but they are a comfrotable, relatively grippy tire for scooting around town on, and they handle rain very well.
Grrrr, I can't seem to find anything I like in 13. lol. The panasports are nice, but I imagine they're pretty common since they're about the only decient 13 out there.

I'm going to email Rota and see if they offer the 13" slipstream in 4x100. it's not listed as a 4x100 on thier site, but I'd imagine it's possible to request. I'd love a set of 13" slips. lol

why 13"s??? :?:
Cuz 13s are totally pimp. :rolleyes1:

Nah, just playing.

I DD my rex, and I really really like the idea of $150 or so to buy 4 new tires. I also like how light they are. I can accellerate better and stop better because of the lesser amount of rotating mass. At least that's how the butt dyno feels.

Besides, it's got 13s on it now, and I've kinda grown fond of the lil chubby tires under there. hehehe.

i dunno. 14"s are hard enough to find decent tires and wheels for.

but theyre somewhat available, more than 13" at least.

well, up to you.

i only use the 13" wheels i got for cheap as a spare set then put the T4's like i said for a very cheap tire when i dont need to use the more costlier and grippy azenis.

i might just get rid of them tho. theyre the accord/prelude 13" "faux wire mesh" optional wheels. theyre in bad shape tho, lots of superficial corrosion under the clear coat.

Are you serious? You can get Azenis and the Hankook RS2 in 14... and they are cheap! I got a set of RT-215 almost a year after they were discontinued by Falken for under 200 shipped... and for the bad weather you can get Ziex (my "snow" tires), X-Ice, and Blizzaks in 14" sizes.
If you are going to buy new wheels (you mentioned requesting slips in 13"),

why not just go to 14" and make your rims / tires purchases easier. One more inch of tire does not increase the price much. Unless you go with a more expensive tire that is only available 14" or larger.

As for the rotating mass thing...either you have more tire with the 13" or more wheel with the 14" ....where's the savings?

i cant agree with you more. the point is that 14"s dont have EVERY tire available, but theres a lot more than 13"s can provide which would end this silly search for 13" nirvana.

Pffft... Anybody can put 14s on.

To echo one of my dad's favotrite sayings.
"That's what they'd expect me to do."
btw, lenso has a 13" wheel that has a really wide size, i forget how much. its a drag wheel but my friend used it on his integra for autocross, so itll fit integra sized brakes at least.

but if youre really set onf 13", just get panasports.
