Piston Ring Installation help

I'm installing new rings on my pistons and I noticed that on the 2nd ring, there is a little groove on the outside edge. Should this face up or down? What else should I know about installing these things. I've got the ring end gap right on all of them. BTW there NPR rings if that helps at all.
