Basically, it allows your ecu to be reprogrammed.
You can take your car to a tuner and they can optimize the modifications made to your motor.
Could I obtain a seat of the pants horsepower increase with my only mods (a header, exhaust, and a cai ) and ecu with a tune? Would it be worth the money (horsepower wise) to invest in a chipped and socketed ecu with my simple mods?
With I/H/E mods, you'll get a very small increase in max HP/Torque with a tune. However, you may also get a nice increase in the midrange, your motor will be running it's best and you will have untapped all available power. You will also be equipped to add bigger power adders (forced induction, cam gear, cams, etc.) and be able to re-tune to take the most advantage of them. More reasons to get a chipped ecu, launch control, you can change rev limit (within reason on a stock valvetrain), remove speed limiter, add a shift light, and more tricks.
