PROBLEM WITH MY GAS TANK

1941 Views 7 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  MX5RACER
I am running out of gas at around 1/2 a tank. I dropped the tank and replaced the strainer. The tank was drained when I dropped it and I did not see any junk inside, but you can only see so much. Anyone else have any problem similar to this one?

like just tooling around town? or during autox?

its normal to lose pressure below half a tank when autocrossing. its not normal while just driving normally.
Just driving around town. Forget autocrossing, I think I would fuel starve with a full tank. The car has a half a tank of gas, but it stalls out and cannot get fuel. When I fill it when it starts to starve, the most I have ever gotten in was 4.7 gallons. This is starting to piss me off. I want to take the car to Ft. Myers this weekend for an autocross, but I do not want to run out of gas going across alligator alley; a stretch of highway in the middle of the Everglades that goes 50 miles between exits, and further if you want gas.
I don't have an answer for you but on my old CRX I had this problem. It didn't start as bad as yours... it progressively got worse. Note: 10 gal. tank HF. I'd get down until pressure would drop in standard turns then fill up with about 8 gallons. Over time (100K) it got to the point where I'd have pressure drop and only be able to squeeze in 6 gallons! Hope we can figure this out for you.
I had this problem in my HF, when I replaced my fuel pump with an aftermarket unit.
I took it out, and re-installed it every which way i could, and same thing, around 1/2 tank, it would starve and choke.

I ended up swapping in an Si tank, with the fuel pump already in it.
I didn't know what else to do, and it works fine now.

Could it be its not venting right?
Does it work if you open up the gas cap?
I replaced the pump tonight and it seems to have solved it. Just make sure that everything is in where it is supposed to be. I was able to start and drive the car with under a 1/4 of a tank. I still got fuel starve on hard right handers though.
