Well, the last couple of days, i've been able to experience something that is beyond belief... I now work with a shop that does a LOT of high end restoration/customizations to old street rods and muscle cars... well, one of our customers recently purchased a Shelby clone (2006 Mustang GT). It has a Paxton Supercharger, full suspension upgrades, Wilwood big brake kit, all the Shelby body parts, and all of the actual shelby emblems and stuff... it really is a beautiful car for what it is.
The car has a couple of issues that we are working out with the tuning, and part of it means that i get to take it home with me and be a test driver
yAy!
Anyway, to the point of all of this....... i have NEVER received so many thumbs-up and compliments from people while driving this car down the road. I've driven in decked out imports, everything from beautiful clean CRX's, to Supras, and everything in between, and nothing compares to driving this car.
Literally----- people let you merge over easily, people are always happy when looking at the car, EVERY cop i came across WANTED me to gun it, and i did happily, and received a thumbs-up from them all...
Its crazy.
This is what the car hobby is ALL about... it isn't about being a 'billy-bad-arse' on the road with your hat tilted, and music thumping out as loud as you can just so you can 'stick it' to "someone", or show your thug-ness. This is about modifying a car so that you can enjoy it, and others can enjoy it with you. So that you can drive around feeling proud about what you've done, not dodging law enforcement at every turn.
In the world of automotive customizing, it isn't simply "modify your car, and now you're part of the club"... So, WHY don't Imports get this kind of respect from the american public when on the road?
Is it because of the 'bad name' they seem to get because of immature drivers? Is it purely a 'heritage' thing with the Mustang?
Is there a certain 'cue' that we could listen to in all of this, that may help make us even more responsible car owners?
.................Or should we all just go buy Mustangs?
Anyway, i've enjoyed driving this car a LOT... but it won't get me to buy a Mustang. I think i'm leaning more towards another kind of domestic though for a fun 'run-around' kind of car
