Not horrible, but much easier with the engine out and on a stand. You need to unbolt the rods so you can get the pistons out, so you'll need to take off everything but the block from the car anyways (whats another couple bolts for the motor mounts). It is possible, but a lift would come in might handy so you're not trying to reassemble your bottom end with your car on jacks.

Pistons come out from the bottom.
But back in through the top :wink:

I did rings for the first time on my old CRX in my dad's driveway, engine in car, without even removing the girdle. A bit of a pain in the ass but be patient, it's not that bad.

On the other hand, the engine is easy to move in and out, get a friend to help you lift it and pull it if you like.
