I'm supposed to be in class now, but it got cancelled...

Troy Campus Closing March 29, 2007 at Noon

TO: Rensselaer Community
FROM: Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D.
DATE: March 29, 2007
SUBJECT: Campus Closing

I am sorry to report that there has been a fatality on the Troy Campus this morning. In order to ensure the safety of all members of the Rensselaer Community and to allow the Troy Police and Public Safety to secure the campus, Rensselaer will cancel all classes and close its offices on the Troy Campus effective 12:00 noon today. All athletic activities will be postponed until further notice.

Only essential personnel should remain on campus. There may be staff in critical areas that will be required to remain. I ask that each Vice President and Dean designate the area/employees that will be required to work beyond 12:00 noon on March 29th. Because this is an emergency closing, administrative leave will apply (i.e. leave granted by the Institute).

At this point, we expect to reopen for classes, work, and other activities on Friday, March 30, 2007. Should this change, you will be notified by your supervisor.

Rensselaer Department of Public Safety
Walking to class there were a lot of cops around, not letting anyone drive on campus or anything. Then someone came in and told my (slightly annoyed) professor that class is cancelled, with no reason.

I love Troy.

TROY - The discovery of a body in a stairwell at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is under investigation.

Police said the body of an adult man was found at the George M. Low Center for Industrial Innovation at 10 a.m. by RPI employees. The investigation led to the evacuation of the building, though Troy police said there is no active threat to anyone's safety.

RPI canceled all scheduled classes for the remainder of the day and closed all campus offices. Police are not yet identifying the person whose body was found.

The college has scheduled a press briefing for 1 p.m. today.

In a statement on the college's Web site, President Shirley Ann Jackson said: "I am sorry to report that there has been a fatality on the Troy Campus this morning. In order to ensure the safety of all members of the Rensselaer Community and to allow the Troy Police and Public Safety to secure the campus, Rensselaer will cancel all classes and close its offices on the Troy Campus effective 12:00 noon today. Jackson wrote that only essential personnel should remain on campus. Classes and other activities are expected to resume tomorrow.

Is there confirmation that there WAS a murder on campus, or some other cause of death?

Been to RPI once, and it looks like it is right smack dab in the middle of a large ghetto.

TROY - More than two dozen armed and specially trained police officers are combing a nine-story building at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute campus this afternoon after a man in a stairwell was found dead with a wound consistent with that from a gunshot, authorities said.

Classes are canceled and the campus is locked down, meaning only designated workers are allowed in specific areas.

Troy police spokesman Sgt. John Cooney said the body of an out-of-state, former RPI student in his late 20s was found between the fourth and fifth floor of the George M. Low Center for Industrial Innovation at 10 a.m. by RPI employees. No weapon was found, Cooney said.

The dead man's next of kin have yet to be notified, so his name is not being released as yet. The body was still in the stairwell this afternoon as police conducted their investigation.

The Troy police emergency response team and Colonie SWAT team are going through the building, which is still occupied with students, faculty and staff, who could be seen looking out of the building. Rensselaer County District Attorney Patricia DeAngelis is also on the scene.

Students in classes were notified of the shutdown by their professors. Those who were in the library learned by public address. Students said they felt bewildered because they didn't know what was happening.

Emily Czarnecki, 19, a sophomore from Southington, Conn., came down from the fourth floor with a number of other students and staffers at about 2:15 p.m. They were escorted by police officers to a loading dock at the back of the building. She'd been sitting in the Low building.

"At 11:45, a police officer told me to get in a room," Czarnecki said. Police told everyone to leave their backpacks, pocketbooks and other bags behind, she said.

As she and the others left the building, more camouflage-clad police officers arrived with shields and automatic weapons. At the base of the building were at least 16 police cars, a Troy police mobile command unit and a bus.

An RPI official said nothing of this nature has ever happened in RPI's history, which dates to 1824.

Jackson wrote that only essential personnel should remain on campus. Classes and other activities are expected to resume Friday.

The Samaritan-Rensselaer Child Care Center, a facility near campus that serves children of the Rensselaer community and Samaritan Hospital staff, was not affected by the incident
Sound like some crazy stuff. Watch your back Tom.

Think this might effect the garage day?

Yeah I didn't know if they had officially released it as a shooting when I posted, so I didn't say anything. I wasn't sure, that's just the word that was going around campus. Anyway, the building connects to a few others VIA tunnel, so I guess whoever it was could be anywhere :O

I'm not too worried, people get shot around here once in a while, it's just on campus now. And the thing about drugs or girls... drugs I can see, but it's RPI, there aren't really girls worth fighting over :p

Cory, you think where you drove was the ghetto? You should see where I live!

Anyway I took advantage of the no-class and nice weather and went to the junkyard, found a new place with a lot of EFs, 5 CRXs and a bunch of 2nd/3rd gen civics and a few 1gen CRXs. They had tons of stuff, but they went with us into the yard and the prices were outrageous. Then went over to the local place I usually hit up, to find that they crushed all the EFs except one hatch, but they got ANOTHER Z6 EG. They are pretty cool, but I wish they were just a bit cheaper on motors... they won't let me pull the heads off either. Oh well... P28s are easy to grab anyway.
