Spelling and grammar.

With the increase of new members, spelling and grammar has reached an all-time low.

I am no spelling or grammar genius myself by any means. Hell, English isn't even my primary (or secondary) language. But this is getting out of hand.

It's particularly annoying in the tech sections. I'm perfectly willing to help analyze a problem, but not if I have to figure out what the hell someone's trying to say first!

I don't mean to insult anybody's intelligence, but I've seen 13yr old German kids write better English that some of the abominations here.

If you don't know how to spell a word:
www.dictionary.com

Use interpunctuation and Capital's.

If you're having problems with grammar; install a spelling checker into your browser. Firefox already has one. USE IT!

If you want to type like it's a text message service, do it on your blackberry 2 ur 1337 friends.
Most of us are old, and when you say "altern8r" we have no clue what you are talking about.

If you don't know what a part is called, either look it up in the service manuals (that big Honda picturebook) or describe it with some accuracy.

I see some grammar and capitalisation mistakes there Bas.
i dont think its needed to call attention to ppls spelling and grammar.

really.

if you cant understand someone, just say so.

but if you dont like someone's way of colloquial spelling of words, thats your issue. in my opinion.

if its a matter of a technical article thats published here officially, then sure it should be edited. but otherwise, its a discussion forum. i certainly dont have the best grammar when talking freely to friends. and it should be the same way over the internet.
THANK YOU!
To bad the people guilty of it probably won't read this.

And when I first typed this I mispelled "thank you", lol
That sums up how i pretty much feel.

I find that the interent and text messaging has made people amazingly lazy and has really, honestly, dumbed down people.

The word is you're or your, NOT UR.

For some reason, things such as IMHO, LMK or the like do not bother me as much.

It is particularily sad when folks from other countries can speak/type better than most Americans and just as sad that Americans cannot even speak or type their primary language correctly.

Also it makes it difficult when folks post on here and either the question is vague or incomplete. Whatever happend to complete sentences or thoughts and how about finishing them?

Then, the offending poster gets angry when others make a comment about the post and/or how hard it is to figure out what they are asking because THEY cannot convey and communicate a thought or question. :?
Yes, because it is MY fault that YOU can't make sense or learn to grasp the English language. :x

When dealing with others when buying or selling, i can tell A LOT from email correspondance and tell if it is going to go well or not.
For instance, when the email reads, "y0, cud u giv me acall on ma cell and we can figur dis out etc.." it makes me NOT want to deal with them. It ususally turns out how i figured, some punk young kid acting like they know it all and figure by talking cool, i would be impressed and want to deal with them. It does just the opposite. The whole "whatever" generation makes me want to kick these young kids right in the head.

then dont.

if i met a random person. who sounded uneducated, unintelligent and unmotivated, then i certainly dont give them the same respect in my response, if at all. it wont make me want to engage or get to know them or take concern for them.

thats natural. is it bad for me to treat that person differently than someone who is technically minded, college or even advanced degree holding, and eloquent in speech? maybe. i think as long as i dont give them some sort of subhuman treatment, i can freely choose not to deal with such a person and want to deal with the latter. but im not going to berate a random person for being in their situation or lifestage. whats the point in that???

complaining online about a persons communication style is the same thing. you just become the old crotchety grandfather who keeps reminding the world how life was better in his day. whatever. thats just being out of touch.

this is just a discussion forum. if its technical in nature, then it should be comminicated in a technical manner. but conversation is conversation. typos happen. mispellings happen. like i said, if i mispoke or mispronounced a word if i was speaking directly at you, but with 100% clarity in your understanding, then whats the harm.

I agree with tyson. Personally I try to spell everything correctly and use proper grammar etc, (my mum's an english teacher), but if someone doesn't want to I don't care that much. I may say something if everything is in CAPS or something, but usually I just ignore the post. I think people will start to realise they aren't getting good responses and change their ways, no need to be a jerk about it.
now CAPS, thats just netiquitte. its just abrasive for ppl to read and really is like yelling loudly. most ppl who di it are ignorant of it. so yeah, just needs to be reminded and corrected.

Is this comment because of the T-shirt comment?
I'm not a hypocrite, I'm human, I made a mistake.
At least I'm not a pompass arrogant a$$hole.

I don't.
When they come at me with that sort of jibberish, I usually tell them, if they WANT to deal with me, fine, talk to me like an adult, not one of your "homies".

I'm not complaining really. I think you are taking this too seriously, but maybe i am wrong.
I realize i am not going to change the world with how i feel, i was simply joining in on the discussion and giving my POV.

If that is what you think, that's fine. You say out of touch, i say it seems like today, more and more, society is in the mentality that everybody is right, no matter if the answer is wrong, we must accept them.
We as a society and culture have become so sensitised(sp?) and dumbed down it is ridiculous.

I'm not asking or expect that everyone be a genius and i don't claim to be one and i am far from perfect.
It seems, as far advanced of a society as we claim too be, to simply expect folks that speak the native language to be able to grasp simple, basic everyday English, is asking too much.

If someone wants to post and ask a question, fine, but try to come across with some sort of coherant, basic, intelligence.

what?

no. not at all. im not taking any of this personally. im quite shocked you are.

i thought my point was clear. you were in agreement that spelling and grammar has gone to crap and should be better. while you made TWO mistakes on your own, even after admitting to revising your first post.
This back and forth argument is why I steer away from picking on little things a member does. It's hard to draw the line and stop the criticism.

Members that have poor communication skills will generally be blacklisted by some members and not get as much help as one who is articulate. All we can hope for is the member will notice this and clean up his or her act. Pointing it out and especially noting every dropped letter and "leet speak" garbage occurrence will probably just provoke more crass behavior.

One thing I agree totally with is using a member's posts and private messages to judge how well a transaction may go. It's not coincidence that great communication leads to satisfied customers.

Here's an idea - monthly good grammar / bad grammar awards! The best and worst of the bunch pointed out for all to see! Maybe some members will crack open an English book then. :p
Like I said, I'm not a spelling nazi. I just want to be able to make heads or tails of a post, and not rake my brain about wtf someone is trying to make clear. Instead actually solve a problem.
I'm not a kindergarten teacher, and I have no desire to act like one.

Aparently, it's assumed that people "understand" when they don't get an answer to their question. Or, just say you don't understand them.

The first doesn't make any sense. If they can't even phrase properly, do you expect them to understand why they are ignored? These people don't tend to be the most intelligent lot. And certainly not psychic.
Or do you want to keep correcting newB's and such over and over again.
On more than one occasion simply pointing out someone's bad grammar turned into a flame fest.

Moderators are getting anal about something simple as "bumping posts" because it clutters up the forum.
Now if this doesn't supersede that I don't know what does.

My personal opinion is that it should be one of the forum ground rules (and you all know how I feel about 'rules').
Make a decent attempt at spelling and grammar, or your post will go 'poof!"

then just respond with a "wtf?" or "can you rephrase that so i can understand please". whatever you feel like.

if that person doesnt ever get the clue, then drop it. its not your deal.

btw, if the moderators do feel they want to promote a higher level of communication and edit, delete, censure or ban any member, i really dont care either. im just giving my 2 cents that it doesnt matter to me either way.

its up to you guys (moderators) to direct the "culture" of this community. its up to me as a "member" if i care to be a part of that community. seeing where most of you came from, i caution you to tread wisely. that being said, being a moderator is not a position i envy.

Ohh, ok then, no prob, it seemed like you were. It is just hard to gauge the way a person is taking things through the internet. We seem to be on the same page, that being both of us are just voicing our POV.

Please point them out so i may correct them.
Yes, i do make mistakes, but i feel my point has been taken too far. Small spelling errors or whatnot, i can live with.

It is the tough talking , e-thugs that irritate me.
For example:
"y0, i wanna put a JDM motor n ma Crx, wut iz the best motor 4 it cuz i wann b tha fastest"
Those types of people that completly mutilate the language and disregard everything that should have been taught to them in grade school.
baker. sorry, i didnt use quotes. that whole reply was squarely in response to shorte.

but since you asked.... you failed to capitalize "I" several times in your posts.

Even if that was written in a post with all real english words and proper grammar/punctuation, I still wouldn't like it.

It's the perceived attitude that goes along with the badly written posts that makes them so irritating. As Bas said, the bad grammar bunch tend to not be the most intelligent (or can't seem to show it), and often don't understand or take the time to research the answers they get to a problem. They become more frustrated, which leads to more stupid questions that are made in incoherent, rambling posts.
so lets get to the REAL issue.
various examples in this post said:

its really NOT just "spelling and grammar" you guys have an issue with. (since even the greatest bar holders let a few colloquial abbreviations and shorthand and mistakes and typos slip....)

its the education level and "attitude" that the author might have, and convey in their shorthand and leading of questions.

what really can you do about that then? educate everyone? require them to change their attitude before logging in? these arent rhetorical questions. im really asking what can be done for the REAL issue, which is FAR beyond "spelling and grammar".

really. whats to do?
