I would start off with the filter.. . . You can have a buddy grip the old filter with a large pair of channel locks while you crank on the banjo bolt and as always use lots of PB blaster

After that I would check the fuel pressure. . . It is possible that your sock on the fuel pump is clogged. . . . just a suggestion. .

i get a code 1 only if i slow down with the car in gear. if i go to neutral and slow down i dont get a code. strange things happen on old cars.
That's how the ECU diagnoses a bad O2 sensor. If you let off the gas with the RPMs up and the engine speed doesn't drop as if the car is in neutral or with the clutch in, the ECU can assume you're coasting in gear. When you coast, the ECU shuts off the fuel to the engine... As such the O2 sensor should show a swing to lean. If that doesn't happen, the ECU fails the sensor.

Have you ever thought that your fuel sender is off and you are running the car on near empty..
I know that a really low fuel level can cause a lean condition due to the FP getting air from the really low fuel level.
Mind you this is a observation.
It would help me to help you if I knew how much fuel you take when you fill up on a 1/4 tank.
A 1/4 tank should really take 7.5 gals to fill.
Also a partially clogged fuel filter can cause the same condition.
Let us know...

i reset my ECU by pulling the fuse for a half hour and the code has gone away. i still have hesitation at low revs, and im not sure why that is. the filter is new, and i havent checked the pressure yet.

i go much farther than a 1/4 tank before refuelling. i push the needle until its almost passed the red E line, and i usually shoot in 32 litres (i think the tank is 35 or 40)

i am going to get a fitting made up for the top of the filter, so i can put a pressure sensor on there to check it out, but most of my cool gadgets, including my fuel pressure guage, are in storage right now.

thanks for the help, though, everyone. ill update when ive discovered the culprit.
