Sunroof replacement options

OK, so my sunroof hasn't worked well in quite some time. originally i was going to rebuild/replace it, but seeing as how i'm a stickler for weight reduction, and I barely use it anyway, I was thinking of getting rid of it all together. I know they make sunroof plugs and all that, But with me being a poor college kid with a budget to match, I wanted to see what you guys though about it first. Yay or nay with the sunroof?

I hate those stupid plugs.
Either replace the roof, or weld in a DX tin top.

In fact, you don't even need to weld. Durabond is an epoxy similar to the stuff they use to glue (yes, glue) the Lotus Elise together with.
Id still like to go with the CF sunroof like you have SETI. Light wieght and will never rust again.
replacing the roof is going to take a lot more effort and MONEY than just getting a CF or fiberglass plug. have you ever spot welded? if not, then dont even think about it. if you are a competent welder, then you got a chance, but dont think its easy.

you can also take out the whole sunroof assembly, then make some brackets to hold the sunroof panel alone in position and window weld the air gap so it doesnt leak.

thats the cheapest and easiest solution. a DX headliner would be cheap enough.
I agree with you on the plugs. I've only herd bad things about lexan and similar things. And CF is just to freekin expensive. Plus it would look terrible IMO.

What exactly would I need to do to replace it with the DX top?
heres my sunroof replacement option. head room++

its not that bad. take off hatch, take out windsheild. take out interior up there. take off drip rails. drill out spot welds, replace roof panel and reverse.

You donn't -need- to weld.
But yeah, it's still a few days of work. Several guys have done it to put in their glass tops.

Hmm, did removing the roof change the stiffness of the frame overall?
yeah after i took the rooof off that car and drove it around, it like bent in the middle. that was after i jumped i tthough.

ballin out of control

Yeah, and as it came down you popped out in a gainer and stuck a good landing on the side of the road. (;

I am curious about it tho, I've seen pics of a couple that were converted to convertibles, and IIRC there was an article in car and driver when they did that to a 1st gen, and I think they stiffened the frame some to control flex after losing the roof. The 1st gen was really pretty that way.
I think the 1st gen convertibles had bracing underneath and also behind the seats to stiffen the chassis up some. I talked to the guy that had the 85 convertible at the Florida meet, he told me all about it but I'm not sure that I'm remembering completely or correctly.

I love whoring out this picture too, so here ya go.

Beauty.
I was looking at roof caps, but like I said, I've got a college kids budget, and I just spent a lot on my rebuild and restore. Maybe I'll just keep the sunroof in for now and think about it again when I have some $$$ to spend on it.

^^^^^^^I would kill for that car BTW.
$450 for a roof cap and that 1st gen Covertable or any year thats been chopped like that is aweful looking. I would take the wheels and motor and toss the rest in the trash.
