Transmission question about towing

2074 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  shorte
I'm going to be towing a crx backwards on a tow dolly, (front wheels on the ground), to home about 1400 miles. Will this cause any problems or will the fluid be circulating good enough?
It's a J1 trans.
Front wheels have to be down, rears don't point in the same direction \ |

Its less than ideal, but it should be fine. I've towed several cars backwards like that over short distances, but i've towed one car like that from Tampa to Orlando... 'bout 1.5 hour drive @ 70mph, and the tranny was fine. Just sure that the steering wheel is nice and locked beforehand though.. hehe.

Is there no way to get the rear wheels to go the same direction (or close) before you have to tow it?
Here is a tip:
Make sure your tires on the dolly are in good shape..

This one separated on a narrow access road in the middle
of a short curve..I thought I was gonna die...

The belt was slinging around and wiped out
the fender and taillight before it came off..

It was still basically round and I had no spare,
So I said to hell with it and finished my journey of a few miles..

Any way you can flatbed it? That would be the ideal situation.

Even if I could easily get them "close" it would still probly eat a tire or 2 during the 20+hr drive, not to mention handle WAY scary.

Deffenitly! I already made sure I have a spare for it, might see if I can dig up another. Especially with my luck.

Not practicaly, Here's my set-up: Stacie's grandpa's tow dolly=FREE, My car as tow truck=Free & GOOD gas milage,
Got 28mpg on this trip at 70-85mph :

I'm figuring on spending roughly $250-300 in gas round trip, I can't afford to double that on some other tow vehicle and trying to find a trailer.
Oh and the tow vehicle is now this one with the same drivetrain from the above red car.
