I feel like this is a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway. How hard should it be to turn the cam gear on my y8 head? Its sitting here on the bench and my friend was just noting how he couldn't turn it and he thought he should be able too. I chalked it up to valve spring resistance, but then I started worrying.

He would be correct.There is actually quite a bit of tension on that cam so I wouldn't worry.
If you are convinced that there is a problem undo the bolts and carefully lift the rocker girdle off and look at the cam journals.
