This came up in another forum i'm on.

With all the street racers around, police have been sending in there best undercover. Mass, has come up with some nice Mustangs and other high end cars, fully modded. There going out in force trying to stop the races before they start. But then the point came up of any smuck can buy a red and blue light and start pulling people over. Then you start hearing about rapes and murders going on where the people thought the person was a cop. So the statement came out that they would run intill a real cop car was there.

Question is and discusstion after, what should you do if an unmarked police car tries pulling you over? What legal actions can a person do to protect themselves angaist a fake cop?

Depends I guess. If it's a modded car I'd take my chances and explain it in court.

Here in europe cops have been driving undercover for years. They even have 2 subaru impreza's.
Do they look like this?

Or maybe this

Call 911 and explain the situation, I'd think they should be able to tell you if it's one of theirs.

i live in a fiarly small town and i know about our undercover police cars so unless they get a new one i'm good.........but if i had a doubt i would just leave my doors locked and leave my hands in the air where the "officer" could see them.........when he walkd up to the window i would explain to him that i want him to call for a regular cruiser and explain why. the whole time i would leave my car in first gear with the clutch pushed in for an easy getaway if he pulls a gun or tries to break out the window

All the undercover vehicles that i've seen have red and blue lights hidden in the grill or behind the top of the windshield. They're hard to see during the day, practically impossible at night.

Around Atlanta I see undercover Mustang GTs, always red. I'm not sure if it's always the same one or if there's a fleet of them.

There is a silver dodge charger in my area that pulled people over for a week straight in one particular spot. Usually undercover cars have a lot of lights on them in places not normally seen & in places in plain site. This charger did.

So if you see 2 dinky sets of leds in the grill of a car then don't take your chances and do as someone said above and ask for a squad car.

We dont have under cover cops around here, alot of unmarked, they are the same as the marked cars. Mostly chevy impalas.

Street racing isnt to big around here with state, town, and county headquarters all being located within a 3mile area. That and the town has close to 50 some cops just for the town, which is a bit much for a small town I think. Now go toward bristol or N.C. and its a different story.

Mark, would you say the best thing to say to one of those "Narcs" who looks like a junky pulling you over is "Please, call a uniformed officer here immediatly. I will stay here and cooperate fully with you after I see a uniformed officer. Until then I will sit here with my engine running until one arrives."?

I wouldn't sweat it too much. I WOULD tell my wife, mom, or girlfriend to call 911 and ask them to verify the fact that an unmarked car is pulling them over (no need for a uniformed officer, just the dispatcher to verify the unmarked's location). I think crazy dudes trying to take advantage of women driving alone is the biggest danger. If a guy wants to kill me, he doesn't have to act like a cop to do it. I've always heard that you can drive to the police station or well-lit area...if you're a block from a gas station, that works. If you're out in the country, I bet you'll have a really pissed-off unmarked cop behind you for 15 minutes.

I did get pulled over once by an unmarked car (not undercover, but it looked like a regular Crown Vic). There was no doubt when he hit his lights and everything that he was the real deal, although they were hidden. Got out in full uniform, so that was a giveaway too :) I believe he was a high-ranking cop with a personal vendetta against loud exhaust/no catalytic convertor (car came with a test pipe), haha. He was rather cool about it, though, and gave me a couple of weeks to get one on and come back to see him. When I did, he asked to see the box that it came in, asked to start the car (like it was loud at idle, haha) and voided the ticket (didn't even look under the car for it). Probably the coolest cop I've dealt with...well, except Mark :)

In the Gary, IN area I've seen a black Charger, tinted out. That thing is nasty lookin!

Here in Wisconsin, we've got the standard F-150's, Expeditions, and even a Mini-van!! It's light blue, no insignia what-so-ever.

La Crosse has a couple RHD Jeep Wranglers for parking enforcment. They get pissed when I pull up next to them cause they thought they were special. Kinda like the way I feel..................$hit.

In NY state,

I am 99.9% certain.....

I am positive in my County. (Orange)

An unmarked police car CAN NOT make a traffic stop.

Read again....
TRAFFIC STOP - NOT DRUG BUST OR OTHER CRIME(S)

The car must have the word "POLICE" plainly visible on the vehicle.
(Not necessarily "reflective")
The officer making the traffic stop must be in full uniform.

(We've had many, many, many "wannabees", and a few real, crazy cops "do the wrong thing")

However, in NYC, no special markings necessary.

Anything goes, from old '89 Integras to brand new Hummers.

But a good clue would be.....

In NYC, cops don't ride alone. Undercover or not.

i guess it doesnt go for MD. i see unmarked cars making traffic stops all the time. 90% of the time its on the highway by a state trooper, but every now and then its in-town. hell i was even nabbed by one like 2 years ago. they look like regular crown vics except with antenna's, and hidden lights in the windows. only real way ive found differentiating an UC from a regular "old person" is the UC usually has different wheels, tailights, and headlights/grill. they are subtle differences, not very noticable.
