I think everybody recommends hood pins just to prevent liability.

The ZC hood bends down in the middle like the regular US one, but it has the bump for the timing cover on the side as you can see in the pic.

I have heard conflicting stories, some say you need the "bumped" ZC hood for clearance of a ZC swap, some say no.
My SOHC ZC clears my US hood fine, or is the ZC hood necessary only for the DOHC ZC swaps?

The SOHC ZC fits fine because the exterior dimensions are identical to an A6. I've never heard of a problem with a DOHC ZC fitting under a stock hood either. I imagine hood clearance is slimmer with a DOHC, but not like a B18C or H22 or K20 or anything. The bump is probably there partly for extra clearance, but mostly just for style.
