I measured the depth, and bought speakers that have a slim enough profile that they would fit in there without modification. I ended up going with a set of PIONEER TS-A1671R 6-1/2" 220WATT 3-WAY's. They fit perfectly and have much better sound than the stock units.
If you wanna put 6.5's up front without modifying the speaker basket, you want to look for what they call "shallow mount" speakers. Crutchfield is where i went to look for a listing of speakers, they list shallow mount speakers as well.
If you don't care you can just cut the back of the basket out and put a larger 6.5 up front if you like.
