Well I'm driving home this morning from working the night shift when I start smelling a burning smell. It kind of smelled like a fireplace so I ignored it at first, but keep looking around to see where it was coming from. Then the inside of my Rex starts filling with smoke . Whoa!!!!!!!! I pulled over asap, shut off my heater, popped and the hood. Nothing burning under the hood, good. Now my fan doesn't come on any more so I'm pretty sure the motor burned up on me :mad2:. New motor is $45 not so bad, but the bad news is I have to remove the A/C evaporator to get to it which means bye bye R12! Now I've got about 3 months to save up to service it back up! Any one have any tips on changing it? I might start it today or tomorrow. Good thing is I'm off of work and don't go back till Sunday.

I hav'nt taken anything apart yet, but it's got to be that or shorted wires. I don't think it was fried wires because it didn't smell like it. Yes I do know what they smell like from 20+ years of working on aircraft.

You can remove the motor from the bottom of the blower housing without removing the evaporator unit. You have to unbolt the blower housing and the dash bracket in front of it, and wiggle it into a position where you can just barely get the motor out the bottom.

If you get a motor, make sure it's the same design as the OEM one. I picked up some cheap one that was made in mexico (about $40) and it was sooo noisy! It drove me nuts!

Seriously, you do not have to remove the evaporator. Search for posts on this. I have done this twice. No big deal.

And consider Duracool if you ever have to empty the R12. Works as good or better and is good for the environment.

Ok Stick and guy's, I got the motor half way out but it spins freely :? . So I looked at the blower resistor and the coils have got some thing caked all over them. They don't smell burnt, but nothing does in the car. Any one know where I can find a new one? Or how I can test it?

The blower resistor just allows for the different speed settings of your fan. The caked on stuff is normal. If the fan does not work at all, it usually is the motor and not the resistor. If one of your speed settings doesn't work, it's usually the resistor.

Yep, it was the blower motor. I put in a new resistor last night and no fix. Then I followed the trouble shooting in the manual like I should have and put a jumper wire on the resistor. Dead motor. Bought a new one late last night and just pluged it in and it worked. Now I've got 3 hours to install it before I have to get to work. Wish me luck.

Well I'm all done only took about two hours, but it was two hours of cursing! And Stick I had no choice but get the Mexico one. On setting 4 it sounded like a bicycle with a card in the spokes! But latter today it stopped and sounds just fine.
