What has been your most difficult project that you have ever attempted? It doesn't have to be car related, but if it is, thats ok.
Mine would have to be making a guitar. I decided a while back that I wanted to at some point purchase a PRS guitar. I played one at one of the local guitar shops, and it just sang. Well, time has passed and I still don't have 2Gs laying around to buy a guitar that feels like that in your hands. So I got this great idea to make one. I had a guitar with a broken neck laying around (Ibanez GAX70) so I gutted it for the electronics and hardware. I bought a nice large section of poplar (bright sounding tone wood), some mahogany (deep sounding tone wood) and some maple for the neck and fret board. So far I have laminated the poplar body with a layer of mahogany to deepen up the tone, and I have laminated the neck with 3 layers of maple, 2 layers of
mahogany, and a layer of walnut for strenght. I am now trying to get the neck at the proper angle to the body so the strings will be placed correctly. My next task is going to be measuring down to the 1000th of an inch to place the frets on the neck. Its been one heck of a fun project, but long, and often times confusing. I still need to get some guilted maple veneer to laminate over the top of the body, and then finish it with blue stains and laquer.
there's a couple outdated pics here
should look something like this if I'm lucky
I know it won't have the sound I really want, but hopefully it will still sound good, and eventually I can replace the electronics with better.
