89 Si transmission internals questions

Postby incomplete » Tue Oct 15, 2019 5:14 pm

out of an abundance of caution as these trannys are 30 years old and have been much (ab)used over their lifespans, we decided to have ours professionally rebuilt. this decision was made when i noticed that the case was leaking around the seam, which seemed (ha) to indicate that someone didn't put it back together properly.

of course, like everything else in this $#%@!#[email protected] car, the pack of untrained monkeys who worked on it in the past were idiots and we discovered a few problems. some we can throw small amount of money at to make them go away, but i have some questions about other issues/parts availability:

question/scenario (1) countershaft drama!

scenario:
the end of the countershaft where the bearing is pressed on was so worn and scarred that the bearing literally fell off.

after some cross referencing and searching on row52, i found a 91 civic si about 40 miles away and it LOOKS like the countershaft will fit in the 89 crx si tranny:
https://www.hondapartsnow.com/genuine/h ... 3-a20.html

however, when i looked up the exact countershaft for the 89 crx si, it DOESN'T show compatibility w/the 91 civic si:
https://www.hondapartsnow.com/genuine/h ... 3-a00.html

question:
i'd hate to make a ~2 hr round trip to pull a tranny apart only to find out the countershaft didn't fit. does anyone have any thoughts on this, or should i just suck it up and drop $230 for the new one?

question/scenario (2): main shaft thrust washer!

scenario:
the untrained monkey(s) who worked on the transmission before us somehow lost the main shaft thrust washer when putting everything back together, and i'm unable to find one for an 89 crx si tranny online.

it's part 10 in this diagram:
https://www.hondapartsnow.com/parts-lis ... shaft.html

hondapartsnow has this part, however, for the 90 and 91 Si transmissions but it shows as not compatible:
https://www.hondapartsnow.com/genuine/h ... 3-000.html

question(s):
* WTF do i do here? ;)

* does anyone have the part number so i can search for it? i can't seem to find it anywhere...

* is it worth the risk to try the 90/91 washer in the 89, or is my gut correct and it's definitely a different part?

sorry for the long post... i'd appreciate any guidance and help!

thanks in advance...

the 89 and 91 parts you need are interchangeable

91 Civic Si countershaft
https://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/v- ... untershaft

89 CRX Si countershaft
https://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/v- ... untershaft

thrust washer
in the diagrams, part #10 is a 36mm spring washer (OEM part no.23927-PL3-000) and part #11 is a 22mm washer (OEM part no. 23928-PL3-000)

they are the same for most all D-series transmissions - for example, here is the listing for the 92 Civic transmission which shows both washers:
https://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/v- ... -mainshaft

be sure you use the mainshaft shims and oil guide plate for the 89 transmission

also, make sure that the countershaft you are getting is in fact for the Si transmission - the number of teeth on the Si is different from the DX and HF
