US CRX SI Production numbers by VIN:

Year:1988 Units:18054 First VIN: JHMED9360JS000003 Last VIN:JHMED9361JS018056 NextVIN:JHMED9363JS018057

Year:1989 Units:18735 First VIN: JHMED9362KS000005 Last VIN:JHMED9365KS018739 NextVIN:JHMED9361KS018740

Year:1991 Units:14447 First VIN: JHMED9361MS000001 Last VIN:JHMED9361MS014447 NextVIN:JHMED9363MS014448

Total 1988-1991 CRX US Si production 65,245 +/- 5

Note: There is a discrepancy between the carfax database and the Honda database on the 1991 Si model. The Honda database says the last 91 Si VIN is: JHMED9364MS014443 Looks like the current margin of error is +/- 5

You can actually test the VINS against HONDA's own database by entering the VINS at this link:

You can verify the data with a script or by hand at this link.

The VINS are sequential.

I also cross checked the VINS of 119 sold CRX Si's over the last 2 years on Ebay and none of them fell outside the published ranges above.

UPDATE on DX and HF 2nd gen production numbers. The VIN calculations are identical to the Si as far as check digit goes. I ran the serials in 500 increments until they failed to produce any carfax records for the DX. The HF numbers are exact like the Si's above. The HF's have their own serial number set 1-XXXXX and the DX's 835 & 845 run together so no 835 VIN will have the same last five digits as an 845 VIN.

HF<SI<DX

To figure out the 9th position or Check Value Digit or the value after "JHMED936":

1)Assign a value to letters in the VIN: A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6, G=7, H=8, J=1, K=2, L=3, M=4, N=5, P=7, R=9, S=2, T=3, U=4, V=5, W=6, X=7, Y=8, Z=9. (any numbers in the VIN retain their value so a 3=3 or 4=4)

2)Assign a value to all positions of the VIN, besides the 9th position (the check digit itself):
1=8, 2=7, 3=6, 4=5, 5=4, 6=3, 7=2, 8=10, 10=9, 11=8, 12=7, 13=6, 14=5, 15=4, 16=3, 17=2.

3) Multiply the value obtained in step 1 with the value obtained in step 2 for each of the 16 places in the VIN.

4) Find the sum of the 16 values obtained in step 3.

5) Divide the sum in step 4 by 11. Round the value of the digits to the right of the decimal up. This is the check digit number. If the value is 10 the check digit is an X.

Example 1: Value obtained in step 5 is 29.72 Check digit is 8
Example 2: Value obtained in step 5 is 29.00 Check digit is 0
Example 3: Value obtained in step 5 is 29.92 Check digit is X

:canada: I did the Si's. The VIN check digit formula is the same for Canada VINS the only difference is there is an 8 in the 12 position. If you have a JHMED CRX with a digit besides an 8 or 0 in the 12 position please list your digit and your country of origin and I may be able to figure out production numbers.

A few years back I tried to estimate the number of 88-91 CRXs that were sold, based on observed VINs, and the number I arrived at was approximately 150k. Give or take 10k. That included all models. You don't happen to have done the research here for ED8s, have you?
I haven't done the ED8s. I'm sure I'll look into it in the future. I think it may be multiple serial sequences unlike the Si.

Dose anyone know if there were more or less of the SI's models produced then DX or HF?
HF + DX > SI Is all I can say for certain.

Update data is above depends on year but the DX is most common always, then HF , Then Si some years the HF is more rare than the HF.

ED8's updated. You were not that far off. I came up with 233,171 +/-2k

835 has its own serial run as does 836. 845 runs in series with 835.

You are just looking at US Si right, if Im wrong let me know....
I am running all VIN's starting with JHMED936* JHMED836* JHMED835* Do the Canadian Vins start that way? I ask this because when I run the 91 VINS it lists the vehicle type as Si or SE so I may have all North America not just US.

Your VINs are only for the US...what about europe...
The production runs are TINY compared to the 17 digit VIN numbers.

Take the Holland members numbers as an example, 2700 for a country of 15M, that works out to 675 CRX's per model year where the 17 VIN market had 65,000 CRX's in a given model year. Add up 10 such countries and you add a whopping 27k to the total CRX's. Of those roughly 3200 will still be functioning and available for purchase after 24 years. Of those perhaps 1500 are the proper handed drive configuration, of those perhaps 60 are in collectible condition.

So again, the numbers outside the 17 VIN data set are inconsequential. If we were talking about 88-89 accords or standard civics, yes those have insanely high production numbers, produced at multiple plants on multiple continents simultaneously. The CRX was a part-time product model in one flex-factory, big difference in production numbers.

If some EU or JDM fan wants to document their VINS as I have for the 17 Digit VIN, more power to them, to a US collector thinking of buying or selling, or a third party vendor thinking of providing aftermarket oem parts the 17 Digit VINS above offer a plethora of information upon which informed decisions can be made.

I wonder if there were any VINs in sequence that were skipped? I know that back in the old days, there often were, especially in the smaller European manufacturers. But that was before the VINs became standardized.

Still, this is the first time I've seen any reasonable take on the total number of CRXes made/imported/whatever. Kudos for putting it together for us!!

Edit: There were a few skips in the HF models, I never saw any in the Si models. The DX had normal skips between manual and auto.

This is the greatest CRX production break down I've ever seen, and of course it's in the best possible location. I have an 89 Si and I'm Canadian.

Thank you for doing this.

Hello everyone, not to bring up too much controversy, however the original numbers on this thread are inaccurate.

There are many VIN sequences within the VIN number ranges for each model that do NOT produce an actual hit on the Honda databases.

An accurate and up to date list can be found here, including the color and interior combinations:
https://www.goldenerahonda.org/2020/11/29/1988-1991-honda-crx-production-numbers-ed8-ed9/

Total production is much lower than indicated at the start of this thread, particularly for the HF models.

Hope this information is helpful!
