After being a member for a while, I guess it's time to start my own build thread. I got this car for my 17th birthday, and have had it for 9 months or so. Shortly after getting this car, I made the mistake of getting some halo headlights with black corner lights. Now I'm over that ricer stage, and I have better plans for the car. I've also put a wink mirror in the crx, which is the best $20 I've ever spent. When I bought the car, here's what it had done.

- b18a1 engine swap
- Hasport mounts
- Carbon fiber hood
- Greddy exhaust
- AEM intake
- Unknown headers
- Altezza tail lights
- 17" Motegi rims
- Pioneer head unit
- Aftermarket door speakers
- Short throw shifter

Another thing to note is that the entire car is lined with dynamat extreme. The previous owner did this because this was a competition db drag car. He told me he held the db record for loudest compact car in the Northeast. Here's a video of it in action

The previous owner removed all of his competition audio stuff, in case anyone was wondering. I don't have many pics of the car when I first got it, but that video does a good enough job. If anyone has any suggestions, feel free to leave them below. I'm fresh out of high school and don't know much about cars. In the future, I plan to use this car for autocross occasionally and restoring it. Here's some pictures of how it currently stands.

Currently I'm working on a hood that I just bought for the rex. It was $40 off of craigslist. It was tahiti green but it was spray painted black. They spray painted over a decal as well

Here's the hood pins that came with the hood

Image

This is the carbon fiber hood that's currently on the car. It's REALLY faded, as well as having some other damage, and in my opinion not worth trying to repair.

Image

The paint stripper! Worked amazing at first, but when it came down to the tahiti green it let me down, I used that entire container, as well as a smaller container of paint stripper and there was still paint on the hood.

After the paint stripper was gone, I went and bought a wire brush head for the drill to finish the job

I learned an important lesson about bondo; use only enough as necessary.

My camera broke, but currently I'm sanding the bondo and prepping the hood for paint. I'm debating if I should paint (spray paint) it white or black, because I don't have the funds to get the entire car painted. At first thought it was obvious that I should paint the hood white, but a freshly painted white hood vs. the 20 year old paint job on the crx has me questioning it. Oh yea, I'm a pic whore if you haven't noticed

What are you doing with the old engine?
Donating what I can to the b20, using the head on another motor and selling what's left

Time for my bi-annual update

Here's the jdm b20, it's a b20b iirc. Picked it up for $300 8)

I got the engine from jdm engine depot, so according to them it has somewhere around 60k on it. After doing a cylinder leakage test I discovered a valve in cylinder 4 that wasn't sealing completely. Ultimately I decided to just rip apart the engine even though I'm sure it would have ran just fine.

Image

Image

When I had the engine apart I lapped the valves, honed the cylinders, installed new rings, and swapped over my arp head studs and rod bolts from the old engine. This is after I put the b20 back together.

Heart transplant complete

This is what it currently looks like

Right now I'm just trying to get it running properly. I have an xenocron basemap chip in the ecu because Crome was giving me issues and I really don't have time to mess with it. The engine started up first try but it sounded absolutely horrible, and after doing some digging it seems like I either put the timing belt on wrong or it jumped (I'm not sure which to be honest).

After I get it running right it needs an alignment, exhaust, and inspection. With the b20 being a little taller than the ls, my old exhaust doesn't seem like it'll fit so I'll have to figure out something for that. Then I will finally be done working on this thing since I'll be giving it to my brother. Well at least till till it's time to turbo it again

I haven't decided if I want to keep my other crx or not yet, but need to decide soon since I need a more reliable daily.

Bump from the dead

After a bunch of headaches this thing is finally getting towed this weekend to get an alignment/inspection.

Then time to see if it survives on the dyno 8)

Then maybe a trip to Eric's meet north of Reading next month??
April 24th - I should be able to make that

The car finally got tuned 8) Made 122 hp, I don't remember what the torque was. I really wasn't concerned with what it made, I just needed someone who knew what they were doing to tune the car

It was nice to drive it since it's been off the road since November 2013. There were definitely some bugs that came up while tuning it but the tuner (Art at http://www.ycunderground.com/) was really chill about it. It's on eCtune so I can finally do cool stuff like check codes with the gas pedal and use two-step

After getting it tuned the next day I went to Gifford Pinchot State Park to get some pictures

Image

As of now I need to sort out a few little things but the engine seems to be running strong - it has roughly 100 miles on the rebuild so far and no major issues yet :)b

After a local crx meet on April 24th I'll be officially gifting this car to my younger brother  I really don't have the time right now to give this thing the attention it needs. Looking forward to seeing some of you guys at the meet

Wow. I'm probably pretty much older than you, but feel free to pretend I'm your younger brother. :D

We can discuss the details at the meet. :)b

Car looks awesome; love that vc.
Yea he's definitely getting lucky 8)

Thanks! It's called 'translucent purple'. It does feel weird having a ls valve cover on a b20b but oh well

#814 ·
Saved my 3000th post for some good news - in a few weeks I'll be buying my crx back from my little brother 8) Might drive it for a little bit but it'll be going under the knife again for turbo attempt #2

Image

Aside from little things not a whole lot has changed with the car over the last year. I have my tunerview 2 screen working now, little brother installed a quick release and different steering wheel but iirc that's basically it. Also had my welded engine mount from a few years ago break so replaced it with the updated billet version

Image

Stay tuned gentlemen

Congrats. Always good to keep a car like that in the family. Niagara is only a couple of months away. :)b
Thanks man, I couldn't be happier to have it back. If the turbo build is done by then I plan on going 8)

Just picked this up 8)

Borg warner s300sx3, it's a 66/73mm so should be more than enough for my goals (shooting for 600hp)

Current plans although I'm open to suggestions:
- eagle rods
- weisco pistons
- arp headstuds / rod bolts
- honda bearings
- either block filler / posting or css
- supertech valve springs and just lap the valves
- b16 head (already have it with blox intake manifold)
- use current cable ls trans and stage 5 action clutch
- use current 900cc injectors
- use current fuel lab fpr to crank up fuel pressure
- currently have rewired 255 fuel pump, sure I'll need to upgrade this though
- some type of homemade catch can setup
- little brother is a welder so I'll have him make a new manifold and do all ic/exhaust welding
- need to pick a new intercooler since I doubt stock evo9 intercooler would be ideal

#818 ·
I pulled the b20 out to swap over to my little brother's wagon, also dropped the tank and swapped over the 255 fuel pump. Once the wagon is up and running I'll start working on the crx. One of these days I'll decide on a final parts list so I can start ordering things and put together the new engine

Image

#819 ·
Alright, finally got this thing in the garage and started ordering parts.

Image

I recently picked up a gsr head so I'll be going with that instead of the b16 head.

Parts on the way:
- action clutch twin disc (going to buy a gsr hydro trans)
- used eagle ls rods / cp pistons 81.5mm 11:0 c/r
- 81.5mm hastings rings
- devcon for filling the block
- supertech valve springs
- -12 an fittings for valve cover
- arp head studs / rod bolts
- blue gates timing belt
- gsr water pump & oil pump

Going to be made:
- top mount divided t4 manifold
- either dual 38mm or 44mm wastegates
- straight 3" exhaust
- intercooler piping

Hoping you guys have some suggestions:

Is it ok to vent valve cover to exhaust? I know this is common in the big block world but it's typically very close to where the exhaust exits the car. I really don't want to deal with a catch can so would prefer to vent the valve cover and block to the exhaust (around where the cat would be) with -12 lines.

Ignition system: Cheapest way to support 7-800 hp without going coil over plug? I've looked into msd blaster coils and the like but don't have any experience going down that route.

Which fuel pump(s) should I use? Was thinking about running a -8 feed line and then using the stock feed as a return. Planning on running e85 and going with bosch 2200cc injectors. A friend was kind enough to donate these to my build but I can buy something else if there isn't an ideal combo here:

2 walbro 255's

Image

Bosch 044

Image

DW 350iL

Image

I was thinking both 255s and the 044 based on this chart:

Image

What am I missing / what's the weak link for 7-800hp? I'm assuming the stock valves and stock cam/intake manifold need to go. Turbo is a Borg warner s300sx3 - 66/73mm, twin scroll, t4 & .91 a/r. From what I've seen in other build threads it should get me in that range.

I was curious as to what you were going to use to fuel this setup.

Interested to see how this turns out.
Yea fuel is definitely going to be one of the more interesting parts of this build, especially if I end up sumping the tank. I'm most curious of how the manifold and intercooler are going to be setup  it'll be a tight fit to say the least

One thing that's unfortunate about this GSR head are these grooves in the cam. Both cams have similar grooves, but I'm probably going to use it anyways

I didn't know when I bought this and forgot to take pictures, but this intake manifold is set up for 8 injectors. I'll have to figure out how to plug the other 4 holes, they're on the bottom of the runners. Guy basically got it powdercoated and then never did anything with it.

They still have rain grooves so I'm not worried about it. Didn't feel like running skinnies, and the only other option from what I could find was a special continental tire made for the smart car

eBay dizzy, accel coil and honda icm. I don't feel like going cop, guess we'll see how well this works before going with a digital 6 box
