One day I noticed my idle was extremely high (2000 RPM), but I know what 2000 RPM feels like. I am confident when I say I was not idling at 2000. Then I took it on the road and saw that my tach reads 2750 RPM at 50 mph when I know for a fact it always was 2500 dead on. When I accelerate quickly, the tach dial slowly climbs for the first 3000 RPM and it then immediately jumps to 5000 or 6000 RPM to where it normally would be. Weirdly enough, it is intermittent. I also notice that the RPM is more inaccurate the lower it is... I also saw the dial bouncing/shaking on a cold start up one morning.
So:
- The tach is more inaccurate (moreso at low RPMs)
- It sometimes is too slow updating the RPMs (The dial has to "catch up" to the correct RPM)
- Dial was shaking on after a cold start
Anyone experience this before? I searched on the forums here and someone suggested taking off the gauge cluster and cleaning the contact screws and pads. Another suggested to make sure everything is grounded and that everything is connected properly. I never troubleshooted any electrical issues before, so this is my first time really tackling this kind of issue. Any help is appreciated, but the more descriptive the better since this is something pretty new to me.
How do I make sure that the grounds are good? I located them, but they seem covered in a dirty residue. At the very least, the copper strands are thick and not broken.
Also, how do I make sure that the wires/connections are all good?
Thanks
