I believe the B18As were in the 90-93s and the Bs were in the 94-00s. I could be very wrong though, haha

 

Yeah so the B18A is obd0 while the b18b is obd1.

The b18b is also rated with slightly more torque and horsepower.

B18A1
Redline: 6500 rpm
Power: 90-91 Only: 130 bhp @ 6000 rpm & 121 ft·lbf @ 5000 rpm
Power: 92-93 Only: 140 bhp @ 6300 rpm & 126 ft·lbf @ 5000 rpm

B18B1 (94-01)
Redline: 6900 rpm
Power: 142 hp @ 6300 rpm & 127 ft·lbf @ 5200 rpm

You can have an OBD-1 B18A, you could also have an OBD-2 B18B.

 

ok great it turns out that the engine crx that ill be looking at today has a b18a1 instead of what i was hoping for a b18b so i was just wondering if it had any issues as far as ls/vtec or weaker rods

 

They're both pretty equally weak, when you're talking about the strength of the bottom end.

 

The 10hp difference comes from Intake Manifold design and ECU tuning thats its. There is a huge myth about these magical cams that appeared in 92+ models but its just that a myth, check the part number if you don't believe me. The bottom end weakness is the rod bolts. I had a turbo b20 that was bone stock and never had an issue with it, b20 is a LS with bigger bore plain and simple. If you don't plan on revving your motor to the moon you will be just fine.

 

im looking for a b20/b16a ls/vtec setup or a plain old b16a to give it a solid jdm look altho first i need to find a solid ride

yea there's a huge difference i can get a b18b shipped and installed in a crx for under 2k i buy a b18c im looking at about 2.3k just for the engine
