also, how are these better than extended tophats?
They do totally different things. Drop forks shorten the whole suspension to lower the front of the car, to allow the use of stock springs and shocks for example. Extended top hats restore shock travel that is lost when using lowering springs to compress the shock farther than normal at rest. There is some overlap in purpose only if you were to consider using drop forks and then raising an adjustable coilover by a corresponding amount, but in that case extended top hats would be simpler and applicable at the rear as well.
well, I must be blind, because they don't seem to do totally different things;
it seems it's 2 paths to nearly the same affect. but doing this to just drop the car 2" on stock struts, you then loose 2" of wheel travel room; exactly the same as if you are using coil-overs, except most coil-overs have different rates (springs and rebound) to account for this change in actuation space. meaning (to me) you risk hitting the shock towers much faster than coil-overs - since the stocks expect to have (and are designed) to have that 2" you just took. and if you are using coil-overs, then this product seems like a total waste.
it seems like it was a good idea, back in the day;
but another question then stands, why would you use these, to lower the suspension in the front, without something in the rear?
