Hey Wind, sorry, haven't been keeping up on your build, I'll catch up when I get some time, just wondering if your interested in a VX/CX tranny and I also have a 1988 CRX HF tranny with 1.95 I believe FD? Just send me a shipping label.......getting rid of stuff. I also have an HF axle too.......
Thanks for the offer but I'm good. I've been getting rid of parts too haha.

nice i just finished an engine overhaul on my CRX. It has been almost 3 years since I drove it.

I missed my summer deadline as stuff came up conveniently. I am hoping to get it on the road by next summer.

I needz tha motivation.

What do you want to do with the car?

I try and post on the forum to remind myself. I end up going over some pages and then I remember what I wanted to do.

In these last few days, I got around to fixing the driver door actuator, added support for the trunk cover, and revived my agm battery.

Since it's cooler now, I'm driving it more and I'm thinking I should check the drum brakes, dampen some of the rattling, and maybe clean the engine bay.

I think the hardest bit is time. After painting it I haven't gotten the time nor drive to do any major projects on it either.

Well, I took off the head to fixe a head gasket leak. Come to find out, it was not the head gasket, it was the intake manifold gasket. The EGR path was leaking into the coolant path. So since I was there, I took it all appart and serviced what I could. Took things to a machine shop and they were in perfect condition. Had the valves lapped and now it is mostly together.

I over torqued one of the LMA bolts (damn wrench never clicked) so I am trying to source some of those from a 1.5L SOHC VTEC engine. It just started warming up here so I may make a trip to the junk yard soon.

Afte that, it is paint valve cover, finish proper multi piece engine harness, and finish disc break conversion. I still need to source the proper prop valve but I have had no luck so far.

Yea that over torque happens from time to time. You know where to get your prop valve?

I have looked in the junk yard but they have been robbed. I am thinking about biting the bullet and get two used ones from ebay. You cannot get them from Honda. I have never seen any OE replacements by any other vendors.

I've been eyeing a bunch of digital gauge clusters and saw on the FB group the insight gauge cluster swapped into a CRX.

Looked easier than the S2000 cluster which is crazy over priced.

So first off is wiring:
Insight Wiring

Next I'm running a VX motor with Civic EG Gauges.... so EG wiring:

Next I found an Insight cluster for 60 bucks so let the games begin!

It sounds like speedo requires a healer and possibly coolant might require a mod as well:

more to come once I figure it all out. comments welcomed.

finally I blame this post for inspiring me to work on my CRX:

It occurred to me this car is a Frankenstein of:
Civic EK armrest/cupholders
2nd gen crx trunk divider
Civic vx D15z1 motor
Civic 84 hatch trunk cover
Insight cluster
Some GM car's rear view mirror
Prelude seats
Integra flip lights/signals, part hood/fender
Civic Hx rims

Day 2!

In between work and feeding the newborn, I found an hour to spend mounting the cluster.

As you can see it doesn't fit.

Marked the areas to cut with liquid chalk

It fits! Had to cut above to make space. Might have to close out this side of the vent or repipe it.

Cluster needs something to mount to

Wood blocks used to position and bolt it down.

Its mounted and looks awesome!

Nice dark shot. Backlight works better when I get the car reassembled

I never realized that the Insight cluster had good resolution/polling rate.

So I would recommend befriending someone with a 3d printer to make a face piece to fill in the gaps. Mark Did this with the s2000 cluster in his EJ1.

Also congrats on the newborn?!

haha thanks. The newborn is 6 months now.

I'll look into a face piece next. I needed to fix my speedo, ect, and fuel. It looks like I got it working now.

HOW TO: Insight Cluster Swap (Work in progress; INCOMPLETE)

Image

This is a DIY. If you want the easy way, you can buy a harness for the conversion. Google is your friend.

First off, this how to will vary based on the car you are installing the cluster into. This means you need the wiring diagram for your car!

So I will primarily focus on the Insight Cluster wiring itself. Wiring conversions are really just a matching game. You need all the cards (wire labels), you need to know how to read a wiring diagram, and you need to join them up (Solder or crimp).

So first off, data sources:
Insight Cluster Pin out PDF
Insight Cluster Wiring (source 1)
Insight Cluster Wiring (Honda)

Some wiring diagrams I happen to have:
1993 Honda Civic VX WiringPDF
1986 Honda CRX SI Wiring
1989 Acura Integra Wiring
1989 Honda CRX SI Cluster Wiring

Download the insight cluster pin out, both wiring diagrams, and the diagram of your car. Then print them out. It'll make your life better to be able to cross out what you've done and haven't and don't plan to "convert".

What you'll need:
[*]Insight Cluster 1999-2001
[*]You need the plugs for the cluster. I only needed A and B. C plug is not needed. (Image is missing C. Left to Right C,B,A)
[*]solder or crimp
[*]Electrical Tape to close up your connections (or heat shrink tubing)
[*]multimeter
[*]Convertor for Speedometer, Coolant, Fuel (I used the K-Tuned S2000 Dash converter KTD-S2K-CON)
[*]VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)
[*]Optional momentary switch (to control the cluster fuel display)

Back of Cluster
Image

The speedometer, coolant, fuel passes through the ECU just like it does for the S2000 thus the signal sent to the cluster requires conversion and adjustment.

Optionally, you'll also find that cluster has a Blu/Org at pin A7 that goes to the fuel consumption switch. This should be wired up to a momentary switch (example) that is wired to ground. It is also used to hide the MPG if you want to.

Now comes the hard part, matching one wire at a time.

Will update add more to this post when I have time....

For those who actually read 18 pages of updates to this point, you'll notice that I've always wanted to build Android into my cars.

I've been told many times that a double din or a flip out screen wouldn't fit the 1g due to it being reccessed.
